EH 221: Introduction to Literary Studies
Required for the English major, the English minor, and the creative writing minor, this lecture/discussion course aims to familiarize students with the concepts and general approaches of literary criticism. It seeks to advance abilities in reading, interpreting, and writing about literary texts. It also introduces the tools of literary research and the library paper.

EHCW 471: Genre Studies
Required for the creative writing minor and an option for the English major and minor, this course focuses on a particular genre of literature. This might include such topics as the sonnet, tragedy, slave narratives, or the epic.

EHCW 311: Creative Nonfiction
This writing workshop focuses on various non-fiction prose techniques using a variety of expressive, transactional, and poetic modes. This course may include the writing of an array of creative nonfiction genres such as memoirs, personal essays, literary journalism, cultural criticism, or nature writing. EHCW 313: Fiction
This genre-specific creative writing workshop helps students develop their skills in such fiction techniques as characterization, plot, setting, point of view, and style. Permission of the instructor required.

EHCW 314: Poetry Workshop
This genre-specific creative writing workshop helps students develop their skills in poetry. This is a class in craft in which students read contemporary poetry, write in a variety of poetic forms, workshop each other's poems, and develop a portfolio of individual work. Permission of the instructor required.

EHCW 315: Dramatic Writing
This genre-specific creative writing workshop helps students develop their skills in playwriting/screenwriting. Permission of the instructor required.

EHCW 316: Multi-genre Creative Writing
Team-taught, this genre-specific creative writing workshop helps students develop their skills in such genres as poetry, fiction, and other non-expository writing. Permission of the instructor required.

EHCW 317: Advanced Creative Writing
This genre-specific creative writing workshop helps students enhance their skills in a designated genre of writing, such poetry, fiction, dramatic writing, or creative nonfiction. Students must have already completed one creative writing course in that genre. Permission of the instructor required.

EHCW 318: Advanced Open-Genre Workshop
This portfolio course is designed for writers who have already completed two courses in a genre develop significant individual projects in a class that includes cross-genre workshops and discussion of professional practice. Permission of the instructor required.
