Learning by Doing
THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (the JN 300 series) is an extremely important part of your training. All program participants are required to have two formal internships for experiential learning.

Because we recognize the need to work on technical skills associated with print and broadcast journalism, we have an extensive internship opportunities. Incoming students are required to work on the school newspaper, The Reporter, for their first year. Academic credit is not awarded for this work, but it is a great opportunity to begin to build experience and a portfolio!

Following the year on The Reporter, students will go off-campus for hands-on professional training. We have a number of relationships in the area: Commercial Channel 9, Public Channel 15, WXVQ - 1490 AM, and many more.. We also arrange internships in print journalism and public relations: The News-Journal, and Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, for example. Because of the high quality of our students, we are able to obtain these internships on an ongoing basis. A number of our students have used them to springboard into a full-time job.

In addition to the more formal internships, many students use the one-hour Communication Workshop to do "mini-internships."
