We all know students who do math well or read just fine yet do not do as well on the standardized tests as we would expect. It happens to students at all math and reading ability levels. Why is this so often true? Every student’s standardized test scores reflect two major categories of abilities: math/reading and test-taking skills. First, a major challenge of tests is picking the right answer. Students frequently get down to two of the multiple-choice answers and don’t know how to pick the right one. Second, teachers are trained to teach math or reading; yet, they are rarely prepared to teach students to take math or reading tests.
