Web Foundations: Course Overview
Web Development (Web Foundations I) introduces new technology students to the components of web planning, design and deployment using core technologies including HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Goals
Students should expect exposure to the following Web topics and leave the course with a firm understanding and competency in the following areas:
- History and architecture of the Internet and World Wide Web
- Creation of web pages that adhere to the HTML 5 standard
- Application of formatting and styles based on CSS 3
- Deployment of web layouts
- Application of multimedia elements into HTML pages
- Experience incorporating JavaScript and web forms into web pages
- Exploration of e-commerce, search engine functionality and web security
Audience
This course is for people who want to obtain skills that will make them more competitive in today's market. Students will gain the skills and confidence to work on projects involving web development and know their work will adhere to the most widely used standards today. This course is for you if you are:
- Someone that is looking to move towards a new career.
- A person that is in a career but wants to work on web-based projects on the side.
- An IT professional that does not currently work in web design but wants to steer his or her career in that direction.
- A private consultant or business owner that needs to expand their business into web design and/or wants to build a website based on the leading standards for web content.
- A current developer who is using software that auto-generates web content but wants to learn the foundations and techniques presented in our course.
Class Format
Classroom time will be focused on an instructor lecture that covers each course topic. A portion of the class will also be used for exams, quizzes and project presentations. Students are required to complete weekly homework assignments prior to coming to class each week.
Prerequisites
This course assumes no prior web development or programming experience. It does, however, require the following:
- Access to the Internet and a computer outside of class (a computer will not be used during class time).
- Ability to create files and folders in a Microsoft Windows environment and basic knowledge of how to save and edit a document.
- Experience working within Microsoft Windows
- Understanding of why the student wants to create web pages and content
- Previous experience using the Internet
If a student is unsure they meet the requirements, a phone conference will be scheduled to determine their suitability for the course. Enrollment decisions will be made jointly by the instructor and student.
Schedule

- Classes meet one night per week in the evening for 14 weeks at the Stetson University Center in Celebration.
- Anticipate approximately three to six hours of outside class work each week.
- The class includes a class project in the form of a case study for real-world scenarios.
- Periodic reviews of student projects will be scheduled.
Evaluation and Course Completion
The Web Development course is a certificate program (not for college credit). Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a certificate of completion. Evaluation is based upon many factors, including: weekly class attendance, participation, attitude, behavior, completion of assigned homework, class project performance and course quizzes and examinations. If a student does not earn the certificate of completion, a student may be awarded a certificate of attendance if the student attends at least seventy percent of the class meetings and meets other evaluation factors including but not limited to participation, attitude and behavior.
Tuition is $995 plus the cost of book(s).
