About the Juris Doctor/MBA Program
If you want to broaden your career opportunities in the fields of business and law, consider Stetson’s JD/MBA program. Students completing the program receive both an MBA degree from the Stetson University School of Business Administration and a JD degree from the Stetson University College of Law. Holders of these degrees can use the JD to provide legal context for managerial activities and the MBA to sharpen administrative and managerial decision-making skills. Many CEOs and upper-level managers hold law degrees.
In the College of Law, competence comes from a solid academic curriculum backed by an intensive program of skills training through legal clinics and other real-law experiences. As a graduate of the program, you will enter the workforce ready to work with a solid law education and MBA classes designed to develop management competencies.
In this program, you will enjoy a significant savings in required coursework and both degrees may be completed within 3 years. The MBA program accepts 12 semester hours from a list of directed electives in the law program, and the College of Law accepts 12 semester hours from the MBA program of study. Your net benefit is a 24-hour reduction when compared to pursuing the two degrees independently.
Course Availability
- The required graduate business courses for the JD/MBA program are offered Monday and Tuesday evenings on the College of Law campus in Gulfport.
- 2 MBA classes are offered in each of the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters on the law campus.
- Students generally begin MBA classes during their fourth semester in law school and may begin MBA classes in the Fall, Spring or Summer.
- All MBA requirements for the JD/MBA program can be satisfied at the College of Law campus.
- MBA degree courses are also offered on Stetson's historic campus in DeLand and at the Celebration campus near Orlando.
How to Participate in the JD/MBA Program
First, you must apply and be admitted as a JD student. Information about this process can be found at www.law.stetson.edu. Upon completing your first year of law studies, you may then apply to add the MBA degree to your program. You must be admitted into the JD program, offered by the College of Law, and the MBA program, offered by Stetson's School of Business Administration, independently. All entrance requirements for both programs must be satisfied.
When applying to the MBA program, you may request copies of your transcripts, recommendation letters, and LSAT scores to be sent from the College of Law to the Office of Graduate Business Programs. We will also need an official copy of your College of Law transcript reflecting your in-progress JD program. The transcripts and LSAT scores are sent from the College of Law’s Registrar’s Office and the recommendation letters are sent from the College of Law’s Admission Office. You may be exempt from the GMAT by presenting acceptable LSAT scores.
The required graduate coursework for the MBA portion of the JD/MBA program consists of 18 semester hours of MBA core courses. These are listed below. The remaining 12 hours for the MBA degree must include Law 3255-Corporations and 9 hours from the list of Directed Electives from the law curriculum.
ATG 520 Advanced Accounting Seminar (3): An introduction to advanced issues in accounting and reporting from a user perspective. Open only to M.B.A. students.
FIN 511 Advanced Financial Management (3): Corporate finance course aimed at further understanding and application of financial concepts learned in the basic course. Emphasis placed on the responsibility of the financial manager to contribute to the operating efficiency of the firm, its long range objective and the financial decision-making process. Graduate only.
MIS 591 Technology for Business Transformation (3): Using case analysis, class discussion, and problem solving exercises, this course explores the critical factors affecting business success through the use of information technology. Business strategy issues, uses of business intelligence, e-business technologies, streamlining business operations, creating an environment that builds innovation and organizational transformation are discussed in detail. Graduate only.
POM 507 Managerial Decision Analysis (3): An analysis of the quantitative decision making process in management. Emphasis on decision theory, probabilities, marginal reasoning, game theory, linear programming, queuing, simulation and trends in statistical analysis. Graduate only.
MKT 516 Marketing Decision-Making (3): A study of the process for designing and implementing strategic programs for the marketing of goods and services. Topics covered include the gathering of decision making data, setting of strategic direction, and the creation of marketing programs. Graduate only.
MGT 596 Strategic Management (3): An integrated concept of Business Administration which will relate the principles and problems studied in the various “functional” fields. Case studies. JD/MBA students only. Capstone course.
JD/MBA Eligibility and Requirements
Students who are currently enrolled in or have completed their JD degree at Stetson College of Law within the past 5 years will be eligible for some benefit in pursuing an MBA degree. This benefit will be reflected by receiving credit for 12 semester hours from their law studies toward an MBA. Once you have completed the JD degree at the College of Law, your program of study for the MBA degree will consist of 18 semester hours as listed above.
- Students will be required to maintain the minimum GPA as specified by each program. (Business 3.0; Law 2.0)
- Applicants must maintain a GPA within the top 75% of their law class. Students who's ranking falls within the bottom 25% of their law class will not be permitted to continue in the dual-degree program until their rank returns to the top 75% of their class.
- Participants in the JD/MBA program must complete the requirements set forth in official publications for both the School of Business Administration and the College of Law, Stetson University. Students must complete both degree programs before either degree will be conferred.
- In order to be eligible to take graduate-level MBA classes in this program, students must have satisfied the following foundation course work with acceptable grades:
