A Welcome Message from the Director

Welcome to the Writing Program at Stetson, wherethe goal is to help Stetson students develop into the writers we want Stetson University's graduates to be: thoughtful in consideration of multiple viewpoints, aware of differences and similarities in outlook, grounded in solid research, and authentic in voice.

The Writing Program offers four Writing courses, ENGL 100 College Writing, ENGL 101 Writing and Rhetoric, ENGL 109 Writing Workshop, and ENGL 201, Intermediate Writing. We keep our courses small: classes of between 15 and 18 students allow students to get personalized, one-on-one attention from their professors. Take advantage of these small classes to hone your skills at effective written communication. Each of our professors brings years of teaching to the classroom to ensure a great learning experience for students.

The Writing Program also supports the University's writing-intensive First Year Seminars and Junior Seminars. By encouraging a writing-rich academic environment within and beyond the first year, the Writing Program fosters the development of essential writing skills: clarity, focus, development, an individual and engaging voice, and an awareness of the needs of an educated population.

To support students in their efforts, the Stetson University Writing Center offers regular hours every week, Monday-Thursday 3 p.m. - 9 p.m., with additional hours during the times of need around midterms and finals.  This tutoring lab is one of the most popular on campus: tutors offer assistance and guidance during all phases of a writing project. Bring your lab reports, your case studies, and your literature analyses! Tutors are available by dropping in at Flagler 209, or make an appointment. Starting Fall 2011, the Writing Center's role and presence on campus will expand. In addition to offering workshops for students and faculty, the Tutors will also be available for one on one consultation during the busiest times of the semester right where students will need them the most: the Library!

Among our distinguished teaching faculty are winners of awards for teaching excellence, authors of textbooks and handbooks, scholars in rhetoric, composition, and a range of literary genres, and creative and non-fiction authors. Don't be afraid to drop by our office hours to say hello and to get additional help with your writing assignments; our doors are open to you.

Welcome to Stetson!
