Writing Center Mission

The Writing Center at Stetson, staffed by experienced and trained tutors, aims to help every student grow into a stronger, better, more effective writer, one visit at a time.

Learning to be a stronger writer takes time. Here at the Stetson Writing Center, we offer individualized, one-on-one tutoring sessions with writers at all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming through revision to polishing and editing. We help students grow by asking questions rather than giving directions. We empower students by being supportive rather than didactic. We work with the student, not the assignment. We keep professors in the loop by maintaining open lines of communication: tutors work with students and let faculty know when their students have been in. Faculty can work with tutors to help support the efforts of their students. And faculty can then work with students knowing that a third objective party, someone interested only in the strengthening of the student writer, can help.

Testimonials

Dear Writing Center,

I thought you would enjoy reading the following snippet from a student's portfolio cover letter:

If I could go back in time, there is only one thing I would change. I would make an effort to visit the writing center so that they could also help me develop my writing skills. In my opinion, I think the writing center would have help make my writing better and also help me get below the surface of my writing and thinking.

Thanks for all your good work with my students this semester!

Dear Writing Center,

I know you all have been very helpful to my students this semester, and I have seen improvement in their writing. I am also glad so many of them came to you for help on their final paper. This shows, to me, that the students also value your help.

Thanks!

Dear Writing Center,

I want to thank you and your staff for the wonderful support and help you gave me this semester. Without your help I would have not been able to turn in well written papers at all and most important of all learn from my mistakes.
