Black Eyed Susan

This plant is native to Florida.  It has a stimulating effect on the immune system much like echinacea.  The roots are used most often for medicinal preparations.  The seeds are poisonous.  The roots can also be used to make an external antimicrobial wash.

Elderberries

The elderberry flowers and fruit has been used for medicine in treating colds and flu, bronchitis and asthma.  The flowers contain lectins that have antimicrobial properties.  The fruit is also eaten as a food source in jams and jellies.  The leaves and stems are not used in medicine because they are poisonous.

Goldenseal

Goldenseal is used in medicine for genito-urinary issues, antimicrobial properies and respiratory congestion.  The leaves are used for medicinal preparations.

Rose Geranium

Rose scented geranium is used as a calming tea to combat tension, anxiety and stress.  The leaves also contain an oil that stimulates the adrenal cortex and acts as a naural prednisone.  Other geraniums are poisonous, and cannot be used for medicine.  Only the rose scented geranium is safe for ingestion.

Sage

This kitchen herb can also be used medicinally for a wide range of health issues.  It can be used to lower blood pressure, decrease inflammation, and reduce risk for diabetes.  It can also be used for its' antimicrobial properties.

Button Snakeroot

Button Snakeroot is in bloom this time of year. It is an important plant in the Seminole Indians' yearly Green Corn Dance. The plant is used for purification by the male tribe members by drinking a "black drink" tea prepared from the whole plant. The plant has purgative properties.
