Requirements for Academic Programs housed in the Department of English

I. GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS The student must complete the general education requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences for the Bachelor of Arts degree. A major in English requires 11 course units of English courses. II. I. REQUIREMENTS IN ENGLISH

One unit numbered ENGL 425 or above
Two elective units, no more than one of which may be in the ENCW prefix.

Minor in Creative Writing
There are different requirements for the minor in Creative Writingfor students witha major in English and students with any other major.
A. The minor for students not majoring in English:
I. One unit in ENGL numbered 300 or above. II. One additional unit in ENGL. III. Three units from the following list: ENCW 215, ENCW 311, ENCW 312, ENCW 313, ENCW 314, ENCW 318, ENCW 319, ENCW 411, ENCW 412, ENCW 413, ENCW 414, ENCW 415, ENCW 418, ENCW 419. Total units required for the minor: 5
I. Three units from the following list: ENCW 215, ENCW 311, ENCW 312, ENCW 313, ENCW 314, ENCW 318, ENCW 319 (but 318/319 may not be counted alongside another unit in the same genre). II. Two units from the following list: ENCW 411, ENCW 412, ENCW 413, ENCW 414, ENCW 415, ENCW 418, ENCW 419. Total units required for the minor: 5

Students must demonstrate reading skills in French, German, or Spanish. Students may apply to substitute another language to fulfill this requirement when appropriate to the sutdent's course of study.
After completing9 credits, students will apply for candidacy by submitting a planned program of study. Before beginning work on the thesis course, students must submitcertification of language proficiency.
