Degree Requirements: Cultural Events
Students in the College are required to attend a minimum of three designated Cultural Events for each semester of full-time study at Stetson (or one event for every five credit hours earned here, whichever is greater). The total required events shall not exceed 24. Credit is given for events on the Stetson campus that have substantial intellectual or cultural value. The requirement enhances the quality of a student's liberal education at Stetson by fostering connections between the curriculum and the creative or intellectual experiences available outside the classroom.
A Cultural Events Calendar for the current semester is published on the web. To be listed, an event must have substantive intellectual or cultural value and must be endorsed by a faculty member in one of the academic units of the university. The event must further or enhance the educational goals of that unit. No event will be included on the calendar unless the principal organizers of the event agree. Because students' participation in on-campus events has a positive impact on the community, it is expected that for most students and in most instances, credit will only be given for cultural events that take place on campus or in the immediate community.
In exceptional circumstances, it is possible that off-campus events may be approved as satisfying this requirement. These latter, community-based events must also receive prior approval in order to satisfy the requirement. Students interested in using such events to meet the requirement must submit a written request, which has been approved by a faculty member in the relevant academic department, to Dr. Leonard Nance, who must approve off-campus cultural events in advance. In addition, students satisfying the requirement in this way must submit complete a form as well as a program or ticket from the event. These forms are available from (and must be turned in to) the Dean's Office.
