 Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some commonly asked questions and answers. If you have any questions or comments about anything, please feel free to at any time contact us.

Q: When do I apply?
A: We have two decisions for admission. The Early Decision (ED) option deadline is November 1 and the Regular Decision (RD) deadline is March 15. Stetson University recommends you apply much earlier than the posted deadlines.

Q: What do I need to send in to apply?
A: We require a completed application, a $40 application fee, official high school transcripts, official SAT or ACT scores, at least one letter of recommendation (must be from your college counselor or academic advisor), and an essay. For more information click here.

Q: May I use the Common Application or can I apply online?
A: Yes, we accept both the Common Application and offer an online version of our application.

Q: What's most important in my application file?
A: During the evaluation process for admission, the most important part of your application will be your high school transcripts. Roughly 55 percent of your application will be a review of your transcripts with attention paid to how well you did in your environment by challenging yourself. The next 25% of your application review will be your SAT or ACT scores. Stetson will use your highest scores for its evaluation. The last 20 percent of the application review is a look at your potential for leadership. We will review your extracurricular activities, essay, and letter of recommendation.

Q: May I send in more than one letter of recommendation?
A: Yes. The majority of students will send us two or three.

Q: What type of student attends Stetson University?
A: Stetson University attracts a high-caliber student. The average GPA of a student who starts at Stetson University is over 3.78. This is a combined weighted and unweighted GPA. The majority of students come from a strong background of advanced coursework including Honors, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Dual Enrollment classes. The median SAT scores were 1030-1220. Beyond this, the typical student was an active leader in the school or community.

Q: What's the difference between early decision and regular decision?
A: Early Decision is an option for qualified students to indicate that if they are accepted they will be attending Stetson University. Students applying ED will be awarded their scholarships much sooner than RD and will be required to submit their enrollment deposit by December 15. The RD option is a modified rolling admissions process. As soon as everyone in ED has been notified of their admissions decision, RD candidates will receive their decisions on a rolling basis.

Q: After I apply, how long will it be before I am notified of my decision?
A: The majority of candidates will learn their decision within two to three weeks of the completion of their application file. Stetson is working towards completing a portal that will allow students to check the status of their application through the web site. Until this is operational, students may call the Admissions Office and ask for their application status.

Q: Does Stetson University offer credit for AP, IB, and DE?
A: Yes. Stetson University encourages students to challenge themselves and take advanced coursework when appropriate. Students who have taken AP or IB coursework will have the opportunity to earn credit through exams. For a complete list of minimum requirements to earn credit through AP and IB exams, please contact the Admissions Office. For students taking Dual Enrollment courses, Stetson offers credit to students who have earned at least a "C" or better in any college level course for which we have an equivalent.

Q: What scholarships are available?
A: Accepted students are automatically reviewed for merit-based scholarships, which range from $5,000 to $14,000. There is a capstone scholarship above these called the J. Ollie Edmunds Distinguished Scholarship Program. To be nominated and apply for this prestigious scholarship, students must have met the following minimum criteria: 3.5 unweighted GPA, 1350 SAT or 30 ACT, rank in the top 5 percent of their graduating class, and incredible leadership. 6 finalists are selected and 2 students receive four years free at Stetson. The 4 runners up receive Trustee Scholarships valued at full tuition each year. For information on programs like Bright Futures and the FRAG, please see the Financial Aid portion of Stetson's web site.

Q: How do I plan a visit to campus?
A: There are many opportunities to visit campus. While schedules do not always permit students to visit during our academic session, we encourage you to visit while we are still in session. You are encouraged to schedule your appointment for a tour and interview or information session at least two weeks in advance. Seniors may wish to extend their stay and possibly sit in on a class, and meet with a professor. Please call for details on this program (Compass Visits).

Stetson also offers several larger events designed to allow you to see more of the campus.

Q: Do I have to declare a major on my application?
A: No. We have a terrific program for undecided students called Discovery. If you are unsure of what major you would like to declare, mark "Undecided" on your application.

Q: How long does my essay need to be?
A: The essay is a reflection of your writing abilities and should be between one to three pages. Essays should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. We encourage you to have fun with your essay, be creative, and help the Admissions Office catch a glimpse of who you are.

Q: How do I apply for academic scholarships?
A: All accepted students are automatically considered for?academic scholarships based upon information from their admissions file.

Q: How do I apply for financial aid?
