Web Hosting

Web hosting is a service which allows individuals and organizations dedicated space on a web server from which they can publish content to the Internet. Web Services offers space, access to that space, database access, access to blogging platforms and the ability to use server-side scripts like PHP or Perl. These services are available to all campus-based individuals and select entities that have been granted exemptions from their typical web hosting channels.

Use this as a guide for determining what options are available to you and how to request web hosting services.

What We Offer

All web hosting services are free to all members of the campus community and are subject to the university's Web Policy and Terms of Use.

Individuals

Faculty, staff and students are offered web hosting space that can be used for a personal website. The web address of your personal website is determined as follows:

If John Smith's campus login username is jsmith, his website's web address will be http://ww2.stetson.edu/~jsmith/.

Official University Entities

The web presence of most areas of Stetson University—colleges, schools, departments, centers, administrative offices, and anything or anyone purporting to represent Stetson University—must be housed within the university's main website (http://www.stetson.edu), where they'll be managed through the university's official content management system, WebGarage. See our websites service page for more information on how to obtain an officially branded website.

Web hosting is only available to official university entities as a service if it's found that an entity requires additional capabilities beyond the format or capabilities of our officially branded websites. Web hosting for official university entities are granted on a case-by-case basis by Web Services - also known as an website exemption.

Student Organizations

HatterSync is the university's official web portal for student organizations; all student organizations are required to use it, per section nine of the Guidelines and Policies for Registered Student Organizations, which also broadly defines the capabilities of the HatterSync platform.

Web hosting is only available to student organizations as a service if it's found that an organization requires additional capabilities beyond the format or capabilities of HatterSync. Web hosting for student organizations are granted on a case-by-case basis by the Office of Student Development and Campus Vibrancy - also known as an website exemption.

Getting Started

Individuals

Faculty, staff and students should complete the Personal Website Request form in order to start the process of setting up their web space.

Official University Entities

For official university entities seeking a website exception for web hosting, use the Web Services Request form to explain why an exemption is needed. Once we receive your request, we'll evaluate it and contact you.

Student Organizations

If you feel that HatterSync is inadequate for your organization's needs, please make an appointment with a member of the staff at the Office of Student Development and Campus Vibrancy to review the capabilities of the HatterSync platform, evaluate requesting a web hosting exemption, and discuss your organization's web presence if an exemption is granted.

In planning a request for an website exemption, you'll need to decide if you'd simply like web hosting space or if you'd like to build your website using WordPress. To make that determination, answer these questions:

  1. Does anyone in your organization have the time and ability to develop and maintain a custom website? If not, think about using WordPress.
  2. Think about the future! If you develop a custom website, the person/people who develop it will eventually graduate and/or move on from the university. At that point, someone else will need to be able to take over. Is this going to be an issue at some point? If so, think about using WordPress.

Once you've met with a member of the staff at the Office of Student Development and Campus Vibrancy and have decided whether you'd simply like web hosting space or if you'd like to build your website using WordPress, use the Web Services Request form to request your hosting space.

When we receive your request, we'll verify that the Office of Student Development and Campus Vibrancy feels that an exemption is warranted and will work with you to set up your web hosting space.

Technical Support

Web Services provides only the following technical support for web hosting services:

  • Initial setup and configuration of web hosting space
  • Initial setup and configuration of WordPress (if applicable)
  • Recovery of lost account credentials
    • These requests must be verified by a faculty/staff advisor if you're a member of a student organization.
