MAP-Works @ Stetson University
"What is MAP-Works?"
As a part of the Stetson University community, you might be asking that question. MAP-Works is a software system from Educational Benchmarking Inc. (EBI) used at many campuses to connect faculty, staff, and students toward the goal of increased student success and satisfaction.
At Stetson, all undergraduate students and faculty, as well as many key staff members in the student services areas, are connected in MAP-Works. The student portal allows students to see their faculty and staff Direct-Connects (e.g., current professors, Academic Success Center, Residential Life staff), their courses, campus resources, and tasks/referrals that can be created by the student or connected faculty and staff. You can view a sample student portal online to see more (log in required; use your Stetson network username and password--same as Blackboard and email).
Faculty are connected to students in their courses so they can submit academic updates about their students' progress. This is the main way faculty communicates with Student Success so we can share in the effort of supporting our students.
Staff in student service areas (Campus Life & Student Success, One Stop) utilize MAP-Works to identify students who may benefit from services in their areas. Some student groups are directly connected with their relevant staff advisors so that advisors can best serve their students.
The key to MAP-Works is that it brings together information we already know about our students with information that students report to us each semester through the MAP-Works Survey. While what we already know is great, the student reported information helps us tailor our efforts to best serve students.
The MAP-Works Survey
The MAP-Works Survey is launched around week 3 of each Fall and Spring semester. For the 2013-2014 academic year the survey will be open September 9th through 20th (Fall Transition Survey) and January 27th through February 7th (Spring Transition Survey). The survey is students' chance to "Check In" and tell us how they are transitioning into the semester, providing feedback on several markers of success.
If you are thinking, "Another survey!?!" please don't be dismayed. The MAP-Works provided tangible feedback in two ways:
First, each student receives an individualized report of results after completing the survey. The Student Report provides suggestions for students' continued success on each success marker, and, when applicable, ideas for improvement. In this way, the Student Report can be a good way for students to assess where they are early in the semester and make a plan for a great semester. The report is a great starting point for discussions with Academic Advisors or a Success Coach if students are struggling in some areas.
Second, Student Success uses survey results as a way to identify students who might benefit from some of our services. We can then contact students and communicate the many ways we are here to support them, including the specific ways each student might benefit from a partcilar resource.
Ultimately, the feedback from the MAP-Works survey helps Student Success view a snapshot of what students need this semester so we can do our best to tailor the ways we provide support.
Students are encouraged to take the survey early each semester to be entered to win one of our great prizes. Giveaways include:
- 15 Bookstore $50 Giftcards: save it for your books, pick up supplies, or stock up on your Hatter spirit gear
