Teacher Education Professor Kathy Piechura-Couture was interviewed about Stetson’s single-gender classroom research at Woodward Avenue Elementary School for a May 21 Orlando Sentinel story about the ACLU filing a formal complaint about single-gender classrooms in Florida. The story was picked up by McClatchy/Tribune news service and ran in many outlets including the Oregonian, KDAF-TV (Dallas/Fort Worth), the Tribune (Jackson County, Ind.), WGNO (ABC-Louisiana), The Republic (Columbus, Ind.) and the Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).

Graduate Maksim Levanovich, Director of Career Development Robin Kazmarek and Vice President for Enrollment Joel Bauman were interviewed for a May 21 Daytona Beach News-Journal story about the job outlook for the Class of 2012.

Atlanta Braves baseball player Chipper Jones, who has close ties to Stetson, visited St. Petersburg this weekend, and many of his friends from DeLand turned out to see him play his last scheduled series against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Major League Baseball website, Atlanta Braves website and many other teams’ websites reported May 19.

Stetson is prepared to move forward with a request to the City of DeLand to take down Stover Theatre, the West Volusia Beacon reported May 20.

The May 17 WFTS-TV ABC Action News interviewed Stetson Law Professor Lee Coppock about a jury award of $716 million dollars in a Hillsborough County case where the family of a 36-year-old man killed by a teenage drunk driver sued the convenience store that sold the teen alcohol.

2012 graduates Tyce Herrman and Francis Sams’ fundraising effort to participate in a 70-day, nearly 4,000-mile bicycle journey from Portsmith, N.H., across the upper United States to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, this summer through the "Bike & Build" nonprofit organization was featured in Herrman’s hometown newspaper, the Morris Daily Herald in Illinois. A story also appeared in the Hometown News in West Volusia.

Baseball Coach Pete Dunn earned his 1,200th career victory over East Tennessee State, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported May 13.

Political Science Professor T. The May 18 Tampa Bay 10 News interviewed Stetson Law Professor Darryl Wilson about a rental property infested with bats for a story airing May 18.

Stetson was included in a May 18 Daytona Beach News-Journal editorial on the importance of education in improving the job market and economy.

The May 4 Legal Theory Blog featured a piece written by Stetson University College of Law Professor Bradley Areheart entitled, “Areheart on Privacy & Employment Discrimination.”

EuniceToday (Eunice, Ala.) reported May 8 that longtime Eunice, Ala., coach, teacher choir director and “Character First” coordinator Alfred “Al” Merlin Marks, a Stetson alumnus, died May 7 following a battle with cancer. He was 85.

The May 10 edition of The Westside Gazette reports that Stetson University College of Law alumna and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi will keynote FAMU College of Law’s Hooding Ceremony.

Additionally, the article was mentioned by Gavel Grab and the Election Law Blog. The May 2 Wisconsin Watch announced that Professor Torres-Spelliscy will be a panelist at the 2012 FOI summit.

Meghan Walter, assistant professor of Counselor Education, authored the May 3 Orlando Sentinel guest column, “Community of allies needed to discourage bullying of gays,” detailing the take-aways from a recent conference hosted by Stetson and Volusia Schools. The column also ran in the Hartford (Conn.) Courant.

On May 3, Law Professor Susan Rozelle was the guest of the live Radioactivity news and public affairs program on WMNF discussing Stand Your Ground Law and the Trayvon Martin case. The May 3 publication of the Weekly Challenger reported on Professor Rozelle discussing “Standing Our Ground Against Racism” at a community forum.

The April 26 Washington Post reports that Stetson Law alumnus Patrick M. Scanlon, 71, the former general counsel of the Communications Workers of America, died April 4 in Arlington, Va.

School of Music alumnus Marc Yaxley is playing mostly cello in a new chamber-jazz trio, also featuring guitarist Dan Keller and harpist Michelle Cobley, performing at the Southern Appalachian Brewery. The trio, known for fusing flamenco, classical and jazz, was featured April 27 in GoUpstate (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Blue Ridge Now (North Carolina), and also was distributed through the Halifax Media Group wire.
