Calling all alumni: Are you ready for Stetson Weekend? Library catalog on information superhighway Want to change jobs? Try professor's Web site Derrick Bell, Stokely Carmichael to visit
Calling all alumni: Are you ready for Stetson Weekend? This year's big alumni event on the DeLand campus — Stetson Weekend, Feb. 21-23 — is nearly here. Committees for the classes of '47, '52, '57, '62, '67, '72, '77, '82, '87, '92 have been busy organizing Reunion events for months, but remember that Ste tson Weekend isn't just for the Reunion classes. "Stetson Weekend is new, and it's for everyone, combining the best aspects of Homecoming and Reunion. So plan to come even if you're not in a Reunion year; there will still be lots to do," said Gary Meadows, executive director of the alumni asso ciation. Special events planned by co-hostesses Davina Yetter, a senior communications studies major from DeLand, and Jerra Fortner, a sophomore business administration major from Sebastian, include student skits, pre-game tailgate parties, and a 1940s-theme alumn i-student dance at a DeLand Airport hangar. There will also be class dinners; a golf tourney and barbeque; alumni baseball, soccer, and volleyball games; receptions; a pep rally and basketball game; plus music and more. In keeping with the construction theme of the weekend, "Hard Hats Required," you'll get to see the newly-completed Mandy Stoll Tennis Center near Hollis Intramural Field, and you can check out the new ambiance in the atrium of the duPont-Ball Li brary. Plus, the new Hollis Center is under construction between Griffith Hall and the swimming pool; and the new Wilson Center is going up west of the Edmunds Center. Stetson is busy Building Opportunities for Students this year; come be part of it.
Library catalog on information superhighway Stetson's library collection is now accessible through the World Wide Web, so off-campus users, including alumni, have access to its catalog. Students have access from their residence hall and lab computers; faculty, staff, and alumni have accerss fr om their office and home computers. The new, state-of-the-art Unicorn Collection Management System integrates the library catalog with circulation, reserves, periodicals and acquisitions, said Library Director Sims Kline The systems administration team implementing the automation system included Betty Drees Johnson, '59, associate director for technical services; David Everett, associate director for public services; and Debbi Dinkins, technical services librarian. The fully-integrated Unicorn system allows users to find information on books, periodicals and other media through searches by author, title, subject and keyword. Information on the item found can be printed, downloaded, or e-mailed to the user's e-mail address. The system also lets users know if an item is already checked out. The staff has had a big job bar-coding the library's collection of 250,000 books in order to automate circulation, Kline said. The Unicorn system is the latest in many changes at thelibrary. The first phase of a three-phase, $4 million expansion was completed this fall. Book stacks that had stood for many years in the central atrium were moved to make way for new computer workst ations. The area was rewired, new carpet was laid and new furniture for service desks and a comfortable reading area for periodicals and new books were added. The library's second phase of renovation and expansion calls for a north wing addition of around 13,400 square feet, additional seats for both individual and group study and additional stack space. The third phase will include complete replacement of the heating and air conditioning system, improved access for people with disabilities and internal rearrangement of some book stacks, work areas and offices.
Want to change jobs? Try professor's Web site Marketing professor Randall Hansen has compiled a World Wide Web site that enables students — and other job-seekers — to market themselves using the internet. The Quintessential Career and Job-Hunting Resources Guide , found at http://www.stetson.edu/~hansen/careers.html on the Web, provides more than 100 listings and links to resources that can help job-seekers, including alumni, find employment. The site not only provides information about traditional job search techniques, such as resumes, cover letters and interviews, but also directs job-hunters to numerous sites at which they can post resumes on-line at low or no cost, network with profession als in their fields, and search on-line job listings. "The Quintessential Guide offers one-stop shopping for job-seekers," said Hansen. "It doesn't just provide links to other resources; it provides helpful editorial content and links to even more invaluable information for job-seekers." ; The frequently updated siteis also the only one to provide a comprehensive bibliography of career-related print resources, said Hansen, adding that he compiled the site after seeing his students struggle with job searches. The 1997 Howard Thurman Lecture Series, sponsored by Stetson's Howard Thurman Program, a joint undertaking with New Birth Corp. of Daytona Beach, continues in February with talks by two prominent African American writers and activists. All events are open to interested alumni. On Feb. 13-14, attorney Derrick Bell, activist, writer, and professor at New York University Law School will be on campus. He will meet informally for dialogue with interested faculty and staff members at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Faculty Lounge on the first floor of the Carlton Union Building, and will speak at noon on Friday, Feb. 14, in the Stetson Room of the CUB, with a book signing for his new book, Gospel Choirs , to follow. On Thursday, Feb. 27, civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael, former chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) will speak and answer questions at 4 p.m. in the Stetson Room of the CUB, followed by a book signing and an informal recep tion. January speakers in the series were theologian/educator Samuel DeWitt Proctor, author of The Substance of Things Hoped For: A Memoir of African-American Faith ; and former U.S. Congressman Walter Fauntroy (District of Columbia), a former chair of th e board of directors of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
