Groundbreaking held for Wilson Athletic Center Pat and Patricia Wilson met on the Stetson University campus as students in the 1940s, and on April 17, 1996, they returned to break ground for a building that will bear their name. The Wilson Athletic Center, to be built adjacent to the Edmunds Activities Center, will provide needed facilities for the athletic and Sport and Exercise Science and allied health programs. The Wilsons have given $750,000 toward the $1.5 million center. Funding is also being provided by the McDonald Benevolent Foundation, which has donated $670,000. The $9.5 million construction program, scheduled over the next three years, is "building opportunities for students." It includes four projects on the DeLand campus: the Wilson Athletic Center; the Hollis Center, for which the university will break ground in August; the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center; and the renovation and expansion of the duPont-Ball Library, with Phase I underway. At the College of Law, a new legal information facility will improve services for current law students, faculty, and Florida Bar members. Back to top
Thanks for meeting the challenge! Every year, Stetson alumni generously support their alma mater through gifts to the alumni fund. These gifts, in turn, benefit our students directly by providing scholarship opportunities and academic support. In order to help reach this year's alumni fund goal the alumni association districts participated in a District Challenge. Through this challenge, every alum who contributed to the alumni fund this fiscal year not only impacted the overall goal, but also helped his or her district's results. And, the results are in:
- Greatest dollar amount raised by a district:
Orange/Seminole County District, with just over $118,000; and - Largest number of donors within a district:
Orange/Seminole with 269 donors.
Special thanks to John, '70, and Sandy BeVille Furches, '72, Region A chairs, and Vicki Hammack, '93, Lake/Sumter District chair, for their extra efforts in getting the word out to their districts about the challenge. Although we missed our $450,000 goal this year, Stetson's alumni generously contributed more than $340,000 to the general alumni fund, as of May 31. The real winners arecurrent and future students, who can continue to benefit from the quality higher education experience we enjoyed. Thanks to all of our alumni districts for helping us meet the challenge! Marty Davis, '80 President, National Alumni Association Back to top
Reunion classes celebrate Stetson bond with friends Reunion Weekend is always a special time on campus. This year some of the celebrating classes took some extra steps to insure a fun-filled event. Class chairs Frank Brown, Jr., and Corky Tedder Dannals, Class of 1946, extended invitations to former professors and administrators and DeLand area residents who attended Stetson in the mid-40s. The Saturday night of Reunion Weekend, Caffé DaVinci, a DeLand night spot, was transformed into the Cellar Door, a former coffee house on campus. The Class of 1971 had some help from classmate Mark Shuttleworth, who owns Caffé DaVinci. Other classes had traditional dinners at area restaurants, but no matter where they were, they were reminiscing about Stetson. A lot of that reminiscing took the form of skits and songs in Elizabeth Hall auditorium Saturday morning. "The all-class Reunion Celebration is popular because alumni get a chance to meet alumni from another era, and share in their pride of their alma mater as the class skits and class gifts are presented," said Gary Meadows, alumni association executive director. "The skits, whether they are well-prepared or spur of the moment productions, always bring the house down with their funny lyrics. It is an emotional time when we stand together and sing the Stetson fight song, Go Hatters Go! and the Alma Mater." Back to top
Women & gender studies celebrates 5th anniversary; begins endowment campaign When Stetson established the Women and Gender Studies Program in 1991, it was one of the few in the nation to address not only women's issues, but gender issues. Since that time, about one third of the students and faculty involved in the classes and activities have been male. "We feel that involvement of both women and men has contributed to breaking down gender stereotypes," said Ann Morris, professor emeritus and founding coordinator of the program. "It has helped develop better communication between the sexes, and increases students' abilities to work successfully with each other." "The program encourages students, whatever their major, to challenge traditional assumptions about sex and gender, and to formulate their own values and philosophy based on knowledge and personal experience," said Karen Kaivola, program coordinator. The program offers an interdisciplinary minor involving courses from a wide range of possibilities in arts and sciences, business, and music. The program also organizes book discussions, film festivals, speakers, an annual essay contest, and workshops involving faculty and students. These activities have had the support of other campus organizations, but now an endowment is being established to help fund future activities. "I believe so strongly in the educational benefits of Women and Gender Studies that I have promised to match, dollar for dollar, whatever is contributed in 1996 to this endowment," announced Morris. "We are very excited about Ann's challenge grant," said Kaivola. Send gifts for the program to Stetson University, Women & Gender Studies Program, Campus Box 8286, DeLand, FL 32720. Back to top
