Students explore England’s castles to understand life in Roman times

From May 17 to May 28, 1998, eleven students and four faculty/staff members spent their days and  nights exploring ancient castles in Wales, climbing Hadrian’s Wall and pondering how the mysterious Stonehenge was constructed. Eleven students and two faculty members participated in Michael and assistant professor of history Kimberly Reiter’s summer study tour of England and Wales entitled "Ancient and Medieval England." The travelers were: Megan Bicknell, Heidi Craft, West Palm Beach; Tarah Brown, Bonita Springs; Melissa Fedor, Wellington; Gretchen Hansen, Bryan Raymond, DeLand; Katie Innes, Tequesta; Sal Mancini, Waccabuc, NY; Landon Mavrelis, Indialantic; Autumn Snyder, Sarasota; and Jennifer Speck, Pinellas Park, traveled with Terry Grieb, director of audio visual services, and Elizabeth Magarian, associate professor of mathematics.

"We got off the beaten track," said Kimberly Reiter "We visited places that a typical American tourist doesn’t." The group toured Durham and its cathedral, visited the birthplace of the Lindisfarne Gospels, Shrewsbury and Portsmouth, with stops at various Roman ruins. The purpose of the study trip was to visit, explore and learn about the times of the Roman occupation and settlement of England. For the students, it wasn’t all sight-seeing, though. One assignment was to write an "Ode to Sheep" and the winner got a day’s pass on the "tube," London’s subway system.

Reiter is planning two more study tours which will each take place within the next two years. Her next tour will be to the Canadian Rockies in August of 1999. There, she will lead a group of students to understand the natural history and the prehistory of the Rockies. Students will explore a dinosaur museum, go mountain hiking and climb glaciers. Reiter also hopes to make side trips to the cities of Bamph and Jasper in Canada.

Reiter is also planning on repeating her study trip to England in May of 2000 with some itinerary changes and a different focus. The second trip may stray out of England and wander to Edinburgh, Scotland. "The group visited Wales this time," said Reiter "in May of 2000, we hope to spend more time there." For more information on these study abroad programs, contact Kimberly Reiter at (904) 822-7541.

New student organization broadcasts over the internet

With generous funding from the Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee, the Center for  Information Technology and Shahram Amiri, vice president for information technology, music, digital arts and computer science majors are producing GreenHat Media (GHM), a new student organization which broadcasts music over the internet. For now, students can listen to the broadcast by logging on to greenhat.stetson.edu from any networked location on campus after downloading "Real Audio" onto their system.

It won’t always be that way, though. The organization plans to broadcast concerts from Elizabeth Hall over the internet this fall. "I thought it would be of interest to those families living out of state and not able to hear their children perform on campus," said Nathan Wolek, GHM’s president. GHM hopes to expand its horizons and eventually broadcast athletic events, too.

GHM is looking for DJs, technicians and publicists. Posters will be hung up in early fall for people interested in pursuing their broadcasting talents or developing their communication and business skills. For information before the semester starts, e-mail the president at wolek@stetson.edu or vice president at bbatchel@stetson.edu.

The officers are Nathan Wolek, Longwood, president; Bryan Batchelder, Pinellas Park, vice president; Shawn Moore, Winter Haven, secretary; Martin Johnson, Madeira Beach, treasurer; and Pat Aland, Seminole, technical advisor.

Kind heart helps firefighters

From the goodness of her heart, Kathy Terranova of DeLand helped the firefighters in Volusia county by collecting beverages, ice and fruit for those who battled the fires day after day. Terranova raised over $250 and took more than 100 bottles of water, juice, gatorade and soda to the DeLand airport where it was quickly dispensed to the firefighters on the front lines. Terranova compared prices at five stores and two vegetable stands before deciding to buy her fruit at Daytona’s farmer’s market. There she bought pears, apples, nectarines, peaches, grapefruit and oranges for the firefighters.

New organizations committed to saving the environment

Two new organizations sprouted on Stetson’s campus to help save the environment. They are Green Stetson and the Christian Environmental Association. Green Stetson encourages both Stetson and community members to promote environmental awareness. The Christian Environmental Association also is serving both campus and community members. "Its mission is to live out the biblical call to be faithful to everything God created," said Courtney McIntyre, coordinator of the groups. Both organizations are collaborating on "Challenge to 2000: An Environmental Committment." Activities will include an overseas summer mission trip, beach clean-ups and more. Circle K service organization serves community, state and world

They collected canned food, donated time to the Neighborhood Center, participated in a state-wide baby food drive, and raised money to help irradicate Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) in the world. In April, they walked for Muscular Sclerosis at Daytona Beach. They also planned an Easter egg hunt for migrant children, had an IDD Bowl-a-thon and, on Earth Day, planted trees at Blue Lake Elementary and cleaned up litter on Daytona Beach.

At a district convention in March, the service organzation fared well. Tiffany Frey, Malabar, was awarded second place for most outstanding club member. But the award they are most proud of is their Club Improvement award.
