Student Judicial Board

WHAT IS THE STETSON UNIVERSITY STUDENT JUDICIAL BOARD?

The Stetson University Student Judicial Board has the authority to hear cases involving alleged violations of the Stetson University Student Code of Conduct. A University Hearing Board is held in cases where the accused student may be in violation of a policy, separated from Stetson University either through disciplinary suspension or expulsion, or when an accused student requests such a hearing. The Student Judicial Board is composed of fifteen (15) students, of which five (5) students, at a time, will hear an assigned case. Judicial Board members may also serve on Appeal Boards to review formal appeals of judicial decisions. Service on Appeals Boards will be at the discretion of the Director of Student Judicial Affairs.

WHAT IS THE STETSON UNIVERSITY STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT?

The Stetson University Student Code of Conduct encourages personal autonomy, maturity, and responsibility by clarifying behavior that is expected of all students. The student code of conduct translates the behavioral expectations of students into specific policies and describes the process by which claims of violations are resolved. WHAT IS A JUDICIAL HEARING?

A judicial hearing is an opportunity for the person filing a complaint and the student accused of misconduct to come together to present their side of the case so that an equitable decision can be reached about whether or not a violation of the student code of conduct has occurred. The Student Judicial Board will determine guilt or innocence about the charge(s) and recommends the disciplinary sanction to be imposed, when warranted. WHY BECOME A BOARD MEMBER?

Members of the Stetson University Judicial Board make a positive contribution to the University community while gaining valuable leadership experience. Members have a "voice" in the outcome of student judicial cases and help shape and secure campus environment.

COMMITMENT

Members of the Stetson University Judicial Board are asked to commit one afternoon per week each academic quarter. Boards usually convene early afternoon and may last from two (2) to six (3) hours or more in some cases. In addition, members are expected to attend periodic meetings. Meeting dates and times will be arranged at a later date.

HOW ARE UNIVERSITY JUDICIAL BOARD MEMBERS SELECTED?

Appointments to the Stetson University Judicial Board are made during the first four to six weeks of fall semester. Members are chosen from a pool of applicants representing undergraduates and graduate students. Board members must be responsible members of the university community. Student members must maintain a 2.5 GPA and must have never been suspended from Stetson University or be on any form of disciplinary probation. If a student has been held responsible for a conduct code violation, he or she will not automatically be taken out of the applicant pool.If said student has learned from their experience going through the judicial process, that student may bring an important perspective to the board. However, if there is a demonstrated a pattern of misconduct or if student has been subject to more serious judicial action, you will not be considered for the board. Board members will be selected by a five person panel composed of current Student Judicial Board members.
