Stetson University recommends that you install and use Microsoft Security Essentials to protect your computer from many viruses, trojans and malware.

You can avoid many viruses by never opening attachments except those you receive from senders from whom you are expecting attachments. Also, any links that are sent to you (even by a trusted source) should be treated with suspicion. Attachments with file extensions like the following are highly suspect: .pif, .zip, .bat, .exe and .doc.
