You can avoid many viruses by never opening attachments unless you are expecting an attachment from that sender. Also, any links that are sent to you (even by a trusted source) should be treated with suspicion.

Attachments withextensions like the following are highly suspect:
.pif , .zip , .bat , .exe , .doc
