Stetson recognizes the value of partnering with business to help make higher education accessible to deserving students and sustain the model of small classes that encourage interactive teaching and learning. Florida's first private university, Stetson was founded as DeLand Academy in 1883 by New York businessman, Henry A. DeLand, and later named for John B. Stetson, the nationally known hat manufacturer who gave generously to advance the academic excellence of the institution. The legacy of collaboration begun at the University with Mr. DeLand and Mr. Stetson lives today in business donors representing some of America's most respected corporate entities.
