Report: Environmental Progress

A small sampling of what the Stetson Community has achieved:

  • Campus-wide Native Plant Policy adopted.
  • Recipient of the "Florida Native Plant Society" award for the Gillespie Native Landscaping project.
  • Numerous invasive plant specimens such as camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) removed from the campus landscape.
  • Guiding Principle and Values adopted, outlining Stetson's commitment to environmental responsibility.
  • Installation of an energy efficient chilled water loop for campus building air conditioning. Building is designed to be used as an "extended classroom."
  • Photovoltaic and solar hot water panels in place to reduce energy requirements from municipal sources.
  • Critical analyses of utility consumption for fiscal planning and facilities upgrades.
  • Large percentage of Stetson's irrigation requirements met by reclaimed water.
  • Refurbishing of the Lynn Business Center done under the guidelines and design principles of the LEED'S (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program. The result is a "Green" building.
  • Vibrant campus-wide Recycling Program
  • Polystyrene cups eliminated from the food service areas and replaced with reusable mugs.
  • Use of "Integrated Pest Management" to reduce our dependency on pesticides.
  • Environmentally friendly furniture purchased for campus.
  • Beds and mattresses removed from dorms and reused at local assisted living facility.
  • Campus Print Shop utilizes paper with 30% recycled content (100% available upon request) and soy based inks.
  • Regular meetings of the Environmental Responsibility Council (ERC) to plot Stetson's environmental direction.
  • Regular meetings of the Jane Goodall Institute's "Roots and Shoots," a campus student group dedicated to environmental stewardship.
  • Signing of the Talloires Declaration by the President of the University ensuring that global and local environmental impacts will be considered during the University's decision-making process.
