| Scene IV: Black Box Theater Needed | ||
Stover Theatre has long been inadequate as a classroom, but it is the only space available for theater classes. Currently, all performance courses and some technical courses must share stage space with ongoing theater productions, which interferes with the use of the stage for teaching. Adding a black box theater would relieve that pressure, providing a flexible playing area that could be used as either a classroom or rehearsal stage. At minimum it should be a 60' x 40' room, with arena seating. It will provide an intimate performing space with fewer than 100 seats, that can be set up as either a modified proscenium (90 degree), thrust (270 degree), or arena (360 degree) stage. It will require a control booth, computer lighting system, sound system, and soundproof loading doors. In addition, it should include a lobby, restrooms, dressing rooms, box office, and faculty/staff office space. It should be connected to the scene shop, and its lobby could be connected to Stover Theatre's lobby, allowing the peripheral areas to be shared. Its footprint will extend from Stover north to University Avenue, in front of the scene shop.
