Testimonials

"It's there to provide support. Counseling is not something that a weak person does. It's someone who is strong and knows when to lower pride to ask for help. You don't have to do it all alone."

- Male graduate student

"The Counseling Center is a safe area where [you can] face your needs and qualities, related to any issues, and acquire back your self-esteem and joy of daily life thanks to professional help and through lots of tender and loving care as well as attention."

- Male senior

"Before coming to the center I thought that all people who got help were crazy and I was embarrassed to tell people that I was seeing a psychologist. However, after seeing someone I did not feel embarrassed. I look forward to my sessions every week. It also gives me a peace of mind knowing that no matter what I have a safe place to go when I feel stressed or scared or I feel I need someone to talk to."

- Female junior

"I really like the counseling center. Every week I have someone to talk to who already knows a lot about my history so I feel understood without having to explain everything all over again. The counselor challenges me to think in more positive ways, and as a result I feel more empowered and capable of changing the things in my life that I find unsatisfactory. Overall, knowing that the counseling center is there for me gives me comfort and makes me feel like I always have someone I can rely on."

- Male junior

"The professional help and positive support offered by the Counseling Center should be regarded as a precious and unique service. After every single meeting with a counselor I left the Center not only feeling understood and loved, but with a positive energy which helped me to regain trust in myself."

- Male senior

"I would not have been able to continue my education without the help of the Counseling Center. The counselors helped to identify underlying problems I didn't even know I had and to successfully deal with them. Thank you!"

- Female sophomore

"Prior to attending Stetson I never had the opportunity to seek professional psychological help. I struggled for a while with personal issues and disorders that went on far too long without attention. When I came to Stetson I was hesitant about going to the Counseling Center due to the rampant stigmas associated with mental health concerns and getting assistance. However, through the support of friends and other medical professionals I decided to get the care I knew I needed. I regret my official hesitance and encourage everyone to visit the Counseling Center. I have been able to begin my road to recovery and have received support from many of the counselors. The Counseling Center is a great place for support, encouragement and resources to aid in completing the university experience."

"I came to college and didn't immediately continue counseling here; I had gone for two years at home. I started going second semester and it makes my college experience that much better. I am able to talk and relieve my stress and be happier in college."

- Female freshman

"I am a non-traditional student attending Stetson University. I transferred in and have found my transition to be very difficult for me. Upon making the decision to seek counseling to balance my personal life and my education, it has helped me to maintain my GPA. I suffer from two mental disorders. It is not easy. It is a constant struggle every day! Please for the sake of yourself, do not be afraid to seek the help that is available and at no cost. Your life is too precious and no one can make the decision but you. Remember: You are beautiful, special, worthy, precious, and most of all, there is a purpose for you in life! [...] I am not perfect, no one is, I too deal with the stares, the giggles, the 'judgment,' but I have learned to hold my head held high, smile and move forward for I have a dream to reach and a great endeavors to accomplish! I think everyone is a star that shines above and that everyone is special in their own way!"

"I am happy to say that because of the counseling I have been receiving, I now have a better understanding as to who I am as a person. I also understand that my problems are not my fault, and now I know what necessary actions to take in order to make things in my life better."

- Male post-baccalaureate

"I have not had the easiest life. It has made rising above that very difficult, and I have little family support. For a long time, I thought that I'd be able to improve myself if I just worked a little harder, but I realized that that would not work. I went to the Counseling Center and I have been going now for about 2 years and without them I am not sure where I would be. The Counseling Center is warm and loving, accepting and kind. I have had many great conversations with counselors and other staff members and my confidence has soared because of it. Thank you for being there when I needed you most and even when I didn't."

- Female senior

"It was a very judge-free environment that I enjoyed. I felt as is I could say anything without being thought of as weird or 'crazy.'"

- Female sophomore

"A positive experience I had with the Counseling Center was the need to cry. As a child, I was told to not cry because it made me feel weak. So whenever I wanted to cry, I couldn't because I thought it made me look inferior and weak. So I kept my feelings bottled up and eventually forgot how to cry. So when my counselor told me 'It's okay to cry. It shows how strong you've become,' I could not help but cry and feel alleviated from just crying my heart out. So from that point on, my experience in the Counseling Center made me realize that I have positive aspects of myself, aspects I can love and appreciate."

- Female sophomore

"The Counseling Center at Stetson University has helped me to become more aware of mental habits, which have been inhibiting myself and making my life more difficult. My counselor has helped me to let go of control and to live more in the moment."

- Female junior

"The Stetson Counseling Center provided me with a safe and free environment where I made significant progress with things that have been holding me back. Had I not decided to reach out and use the center, I would not have progressed as far and as quickly as I have."

- Male freshman

"I was having a hard time coping with my trauma. It was really starting to affect my academics and my personal relationships. The Counseling Center made me feel comfortable and understood. My sessions have helped me deal with my trauma and I have improved. I am much better coming out of the Counseling Center than I was going in."

- Female senior

"I always had trouble with stress and other issues of not liking myself and accepting who I am and other issues. A friend of my told me that she had went to the counseling center and they really helped her. She saw how bad I was and told me that she felt weird about going there but after she did she felt better. I felt like if people saw me or knew that I was getting help they would judge me and think of me as weird or a freak. I didn't go for a long time but finally I ended up going and I'm glad I did. The staff was welcoming and loving and helped me discover a lot about myself and other issues that I had been facing. Even though I felt like a freak and people would judge me I now tell people that the Counseling Center really helped me and if they need someone to talk to they should go."

- Female junior

"I've never been made to feel less for my experiences, mental illness, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. I've been welcomed, supported, and given coping techniques. I strongly recommend the Counseling Center with the caveat that no amount of counseling will work unless the client wishes for it to work."
