Office of the Chaplain

Chaplains' Office

The mission of Stetson University’s Chaplaincy is to articulate, support, give witness to, and develop the religious and spiritual dimensions of life within the university setting, recognizing the plurality of religious traditions present; and to lead the community and its members to integrate these dimensions more fully in their lives.

Spiritual Guidance and Support

The Chaplains’ office exists to aid and guide the Stetson University community in developing and maintaining the religious and spiritual dimensions of life.

Services offered by our chaplains include support during emergencies, hospitalization and other crises; spiritual guidance; help in finding a nearby religious community of your tradition; and programs to empower personal and spiritual growth, including special events and weekly interfaith gatherings.

Our chaplains, Rev. Christy Correll-Hughes, Sensei Morris Sekiyo Sullivan and Rev. Willie Barnes, Jr. are available to meet with students individually and to conduct programs and services with groups.

Rev. Willie Barnes Jr. is an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) and currently serves as the pastor of Mount Zion A.M.E. Church in Daytona Beach, FL.

Rev. Christy Correll-Hughes is an ordained Baptist minister, a Certified Leadership Coach and lay leader at New Covenant Baptist Church in DeLand. She comes to Stetson University after serving in the chaplain’s office at Baylor University.

Sensei Morris Sekiyo Sullivan is an ordained Buddhist minister, spiritual head of Volusia Buddhist Fellowship in DeLand, meditation and mindfulness teacher and Zen Master in Rinzai Zen.

Each chaplain is available to all students and other members of the Stetson community, regardless of religious affiliation or non-affiliation.

Ceremonies, Services and Gatherings

Stetson University’s three Chaplains share an interfaith message during Sacred Space, a weekly gathering. Sacred Space services are Mondays at 7:15 p.m.; unless otherwise noted, the gatherings are in Lee Chapel inside Elizabeth Hall.

The chaplains also officiate and participate in university ceremonies and events, as well as for student and alumni groups.

Meet With a Chaplain

Currently, the chaplains’ office is located at CUB 230. In late October 2017, the office will move to Griffith Hall.

Office Hours vary. Chaplains are available during regular business hours as well as evenings and weekends as needed. For more information or to meet with a chaplain, contact the Office of the Chaplains at stetsonchaplain@stetson.edu or 386-822-7523.
