Experiential education, including internships,  is an integral part of a Stetson education. Through generous alumni and organizational donations, the Career Development and Academic Advising office is able to offer scholarships, awarded on top of a student’s financial aid package, in support of internship experiences.

Karen Schmitt Roberts Career Development Internship Travel Fund

The Karen Schmitt Roberts Career Development Travel Fund, sponsored by Stetson’s Alumni Association Board of Directors provides need-based travel scholarships for student interns, with preference given to students with unpaid internships. The
scholarships  will provide funds for all or part of a student’s travel expenses, or other aspects of an internship the committee deems appropriate, enabling the student to participate in an experience that might not otherwise be possible.

Target Grant

This grant provides financial support for students pursuing internship opportunities that foster learning and development of leadership, mentoring  and communication skills.

Bank of America Grant

The grant will help connect up to five first-generation, defined as those students whose parents have not obtained a bachelor’s degree, and low-to-moderate income, defined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as those students eligible for the federal Pell Grant program through, students with employment opportunities, providing students on-the-job experiences, and helping students complete their post-secondary education.

Who can apply for a scholarship? Current undergraduate students enrolled at Stetson University.

How much funding is available? It depends on the total amount of alumni and organizational donations and may vary from year to year.

Can I be completing a paid internship and still receive a scholarship? Yes, however, preference will be given to students completing unpaid internships.

Do I have to be pursuing a specific major/program of study to be eligible? No – we strongly encourage students from all majors to apply.

Will I receive the scholarship prior to my departure? Yes, all scholarship checks are awarded and presented at a reception in late April.

How will I find out if I received a scholarship?  All applicants will receive an award letter in their on-campus mail box by mid-April.

When is my application due?  Application materials must be submitted no later than 4:00 PM on Monday, March 25, 2013. Only completed applications will be considered.

Do I need to do anything after I have completed my internship? Yes, each scholarship recipient is required to write a thank you letter to the alumni or organization funding your award. Specific details will be included in the award letter. Some
students will be required to submit travel receipts and possibly attend a Stetson University Alumni Board meeting in the fall semester to report back on the experience and what you learned. Again, this will be detailed in the award letter.

Application Process

What does my application need to include? Each applicant must complete the on-line application form (http://goo.gl/oJDsi) and submit the following supporting materials to career@stetson.edu.

  • Resume
  • Verification of the internship offer and acceptance (such as an offer letter from the internship supervisor)
  • Personal Statement addressing:
    •  why you are interested in the internship
    •  how you expect to benefit from the experience
    •  how you would use the scholarship funds (if possible, be specific about projected expenses—air flight, gas
       mileage, etc.)
    •  are you the first in your family to attend/graduate from college?
    •  are you eligible for the federal Pell Grant program?
    •  any other information you think will support your application. 
  • Student must be prepared to turn in receipts of travel expenses to receive the scholarship.

All application

No late applications will be accepted.

Final decisions will
be made and award letters placed in students’ on-campus mail box by mid-April.
Award recipients will be asked to attend a reception in late April to receive
their scholarship check.
