Indoor Volleyball Rules
(11/3/09)
High School Federation rules will apply except where modified by Stetson IM rules.
Players and Substitutes
- A team consists of 6 players. A minimum of 4 players.
- Substitutions may occur during dead ball situations. Substitution may be by rotating in players at one spot in the rotation or by individual substitution. Substitution method must stay the same for entire game.
The Game
- A match consists of the best two out of three games using rally scoring. Games 1 & 2 are played to 25 points and game 3, if necessary, is played to 15 points. Team must be ahead by 2 points to win.
- Each team may call one 30 second time-out per game.
The Court
Out-of-Bounds includes:
- The wall, floor, officials, net antenna, the ceiling on the opponent's side of the net, and any other objects outside the court.
In-Bounds:
- When a ball in play touches any part of the boundary line, it is considered in-bounds.
- A ball can hit the ceiling on the offensive team's side of the net on the first and second hit and still be in-play by that team.
The Serve
- The Officials shall conduct a coin toss between the captains of the two teams. The team winning the coin toss has the choice of either side of the court or the serve. If they choose the serve, the opposing team chooses the side and vice versa. The team serving first in the first game shall not serve first in the next game. In the third game, another coin toss will determine who serves first.
- Server must wait for the referee's signal before serving. The server then has 5 seconds to serve.
- When the serve is awarded to a team, that team shall rotate clockwise one position.
- Each member of a team shall serve in turn, according to their position on the court. The server shall continue to serve until a side-out is declared. Serving out of order results in a side-out and loss of points during that serve.
- Defensive team may not play the serve until it has passed below the top of the net. (i.e. can't block or spike the serve above the top of the net)
During Play
- Reaching over the net is permitted on a block, if the opponents have completed their attack..
- Center line: foot may touch the centerline but not cross the line
- A ball contacting and crossing the net at any time in the game, shall remain in play provided contact is within the net antennas.
- A ball is considered to have crossed the net when it has broken the plane of the net and when it is partly over the net and contacted by an opponent.
- Successive plays of the ball by a player whose first play is an attempt to block shall be permitted. The next play shall count as the first of the three hits allowed this player's team.
- When opponents make simultaneous contact of the ball, the player on the opposite side of the net from which the ball falls shall be considered the player to have touched the ball last. The other player may participate in the next play and the simultaneous contact shall not count as 1 of the 3 allowed that team.
- The ball may be played with the foot if the player's foot is on the floor.
Net Violations
During a live ball, a net violation occurs when:
- The net or net supports are illegally touched.
- A player contacts the referee platform
- A player illegally reaches over the net and contacts the ball.
- There is interference by a player who makes contact with an opponent which interferes with that opponent's legitimate effort to play the ball.
- Contacting the net or any part of it, including net supports or the net antennas, while the ball is in play is prohibited, except by a player's hair or if the force of the ball hit by an opponent pushes the net or its supports into a player.
Coed Rules
· If the ball is contacted more than one time before being returned over the net, one of the two or three contacts must be by a female.
· Men and women must alternate in the serving order.
· A team may not have more men than women on the court at any time.
