Outdoor Soccer Rules

Revised (10/21/08)

  • Each team will consist of eight (8) players, including a goalkeeper. Minimum of six (6) players to continue after 15 minutes.

  • The team winning the coin toss shall have the option of:

(a) choosing which end of the field to defend or

(b) taking the kick off (kick-off: once kicked must be touched by another player)

To start the second half, teams switch ends and the other team takes the kick-off

  • The game will consist of 22 minute halves with a 5 minute intermission. Tournament only: In the event of a tie at the end of regulation time, there will be a 5 minute sudden death overtime (new coin toss). If the game is still tied it will be decided by penalty kicks (no subs allowed)

  • Clock stops for injuries, penalty kicks, cautions, disqualifications, goals, & time outs.

  • The entire ball must cross the line for a goal to be scored.

  • There are no off-sides.

  • Goal Keeper

-the goal keeper may not play the ball with his/her hands when:

-the ball is played back to him/her by a member of own team.

-the ball is passed to him/her on a throw-in by a member of own team.

-after having controlled the ball with his/her hands, the ball is released into play.

-outside the goal area.

-after controlling the ball with the hands the goal keeper has 6 second to release the ball.

  • Substitutions Substitutions may be made at the following times:

-Before goal kick, after goal, during an injury timeout, after a caution or disqualification, and

-Before a throw-in or corner kick by the substitutes team, if the sub has reported and is at midfield prior to the whistle stopping play.

Fouls

Yellow Card is issued as a caution (offending player must leave field until next substitution opportunity-sub may come in for that person)

Examples:

-Profanity

-Holding shirt

-Deliberate handball

-Persistent infringement of rules

-Deliberate pushing, shoving, and rough play

Red Card is issued for violent conduct (also 2 yellow cards = red)

Examples:

-Charging opponent

-Deliberate kicking, charging, striking, etc..

  • IF a player receives two yellow cards during a game, he/she is disqualified from that game and prohibited from returning for its entirety. No sub allowed on disqualification.
  • If a player receives a red card, he/she is ejected from that game and indefinitely suspended from all intramural activity. (See IM Team Captain's Guide). No sub allowed on disqualification.

  • Free Kicks

Free kicks are awarded for any fouls committed by the other team. Opposing players must be at least 10 yards from the ball during a free kick. Any free kick awarded to the defending team within it's own goal area will be taken from any point in the goal area. An indirect free kick awarded to a team in the opponent's penalty area will be taken from the nearest point on the goal-area line parallel to the end line.

A goal may be scored on a direct free kick with no other player touching the ball; on an indirect free kick or a throw-in, another player must touch the ball before a goal can be scored.


Examples of a Direct free kick

-Kick, trips, or pushes opponent

-Jumps onto an opponent

-Charges from behind

-Holding opponents clothing, body

-Striking opponent

Example of Indirect free kick

-High kicking

-Unsportsmanlike behavior

-GK touches ball passed back

-GK holds ball >6 sec.

-Preventing GK from playing ball


Penalty Kick

Direct kick when a team fouls an opponent in penalty area. Once kicked, it cannot be touched again by kicker until another player on team touches it. All other players must be outside box before kick is taken.

Equipment

-Soccer cleats only (no baseball cleats)

-Shin guards recommended

-No jewelry

-Teams must have matching jerseys, with the exception of the goal keeper, who must have a contrasting jersey.
