Intramural Floor Hockey Rules (10/13/09)

The Game: Intramural Floor Hockey will be governed by standard ice hockey rules, except as modified below.

Players: Six (6) players on the court. Five (5) floor players and a goalie.

Timing: Three 12 (12)-minute periods, running time, with 2 minutes between periods.

Overtime: Regular season: 5 minutes sudden death (first to score wins)

Tournament: 5 minutes sudden death followed by a 5 player

shoot-out. Followed by the same 5 players in the same order sudden death

shootout, etc. (as necessary)

Penalties: Minor = 3 minutes

Major = 5 minutes

Court: Played on the back half of the field house floor with curtain and wall as side boards and portable one foot high boards on the ends. Goals are 4' high x 6' wide.

Blue Line: The blue line (off side line) is the side line of the main BB court.

Red Line: The red line (mid court) is the center line of the side BB court.

Goal crease: Area marked off in front of the goal.

Equipment: Goalie stick and face mask (mandatory), floor player sticks and ball will be provided by IM Sports.

Additional player equipment: Goalie may wear baseball size shin guards and chest protector and a baseball glove on the non-stick hand. All players may wear soccer style shin guards and gloves. No other padding or braces may be worn above the waist and jewelry of any kind is prohibited.

Note: Only the player with the goalie stick will have goalie privileges concerning control of the ball. If a team pulls the goalie and has another player with a floor stick on the court, no player on the team may legally cover or hold the ball in the crease.

Face Off: Used to start period one and overtime and to re-start game after double violation or double foul.

- all players must be on their defensive side of the face off spot.

- face off opponents place sticks on the floor, pointing toward each other and one foot apart.

- official drops ball between sticks to start play.

Note: Period 2 starts with the home team having possession for an indirect hit at their blue line and period 3 starts with the visiting team starting at their blue line. Teams switch ends each period. All players must be in their defensive end of the court to start period.

Stick handling: Blade of the stick must be kept below the waist at all times, except in a controlled crossover, with no more than one other player in the vicinity.

Off Sides: No offsides

Out of Play: If the ball goes out of play (over the boards, gets stuck on the court, or in back of the goal) or play is stopped because of a violation or penalty, it will be awarded to the opponent of the last player touching it or offending team for an indirect hit at the nearest spot to where play stopped (exception: if the attacking team is awarded the ball in the front court it will be put in play at the nearest spot outside of the three-point basketball arc.)

Restarts: 1) All defenders must back off 10 feet from the ball.

(Indirect hit) 2) Official blows whistle (this does not start play).

3) Play resumes when attacking player touches puck with stick or foot.

4) A goal cannot be scored until another attacking player touches the ball or a defensive player has control of the ball.

Playing the ball: - The ball may be played with the stick, foot, or hand; however, a goal

cannot be scored, directly or indirectly, when the ball is intentionally played by an attacking player's foot or any part of the body.

- A court player may catch and immediately drop the ball; however, the ball may not be advanced forward or passed to a teammate.

- A court player may not play the ball in any manner when not standing.

- If a floor player inadvertently falls and covers the ball, it is considered a violation and it is given to the opponents for an indirect hit. If a floor player intentionally covers the ball outside the crease = minor penalty. If intentionally covered in the crease = penalty shot.

Goalie: - The goalie must be standing at all times, except when making a play on the ball while in the crease (The goalie is considered in the crease when any part of body is touching the floor in the crease.) Once the ball is controlled or under any part of a non-standing goalie the attacking players may not attempt to play it.

- When the goalie controls or covers the ball in traffic the referee will blow the whistle immediately to stop play. Play is stopped until all attacking players clear the attack zone (back past the blue line) and, after the official's whistle, the goalie puts the ball on the floor. Goalie may drop it and hit it or throw it anywhere in back of the blue line.

- When the goalie controls or covers the ball and no attacking players are nearby, the official should delay the whistle and allow the attacking players to immediately clear the attack zone. The goalie must then immediately put the ball back in play by placing it on the floor or throwing it to a teammate anywhere in back of the blue line and play continues as soon as the ball touches the floor. (All attacking players remain on-side until the ball crosses the red line.)

3rd Player in If the ball is momentarily tied up along the boards or side wall between two opposing players, no other player may attempt to play it. If a 3rd player enters the play, the whistle will be blown and the ball awarded to the opponents.

Violations: Penalized by awarding the ball to opponents for indirect hit.

1) High stick in open court.

2) Floor player inadvertently covering ball.

3) Last to touch ball that goes out of play.

4) 3rd player in on ball along boards

5) Illegally advancing the ball with hand (hand pass).

6) Playing the ball when not standing (except goalie when in the crease).

7) Intentionally causing the ball to go into opponent's goal, directly or indirectly, with any part of the body. Goal can only be scored with the stick.

8) Off-sides.

9) Non-contact interference with the goalie in the crease (i.e. – hanging out in the crease). 1st offense only.

Penalties: 3 minute = First penalty, each player, if minor. (If on goalie, floor player may serve)

If team is scored upon while shorthanded, 3-minute penalty ends.

5 minute = Second penalty * (on same player), if minor.

= First penalty, if major.

5 minutes + disqualification = Third penalty* or first penalty after a major penalty.

5 minutes + ejection = Second major penalty*, or as warranted on first major.

NOTE: Minimun number of players in the game is 4 (3) so, if a team has two players in the penalty box when another penalty is committed the player goes to the box and the team can put a substitute into the game.

If no subs are available, a player serving a minor penalty can leave the box to be the 4th player on the court. The team will continue to play two players shorthanded until they are down to one penalty being served.

Minor: 1) High stick in traffic.

2) Checking, charging, tripping or other dangerous or rough play.

3) Slashing opponent or stick.

4) Floor player or goalie (out of crease) intentionally covering or holding ball.

5) Contact interference or second non-contact interference with goalie.

6) Participate with a broken stick.

Major: 1) Excessively rough foul.

2) Unsportsmanlike conduct.

Penalty Shot: 1) Floor player intentionally covering or catching ball in own crease.

2) Intentional foul from behind on player with breakaway (uncontested) play on goalie or open goal.

Administering Penalty shot: The ball is place on the center line. At the whistle the attacker goes one-on-one with the goalie. Attacker must make continuous movement toward the end line and gets one shot on goal. (i.e. no rebound opportunity). The goalie may not leave the crease in attempt to stop the attacker.

Penalty Box: Chair located at the score bench – penalty time starts when player is in the "box."

- After returning to the game following a penalty, the entering player must cross the center line before touching the ball in the attack zone (offensive end of the court).
