The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented annually to up to four Stetson University alumni who, through outstanding achievement in their lives and professions, have brought distinction and special recognition to Stetson University.

George H. Shriver '53Dr. George H. Shriver, a 1953 magna cum laude graduate of Stetson University and a Phi Beta Kappa member, also received a bachelor's degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1956 and a doctorate from Duke University in 1961. He was named a Swiss-American Exchange Fellow at the University of Geneva from 1965 to 1966. Elected Professor of the Year at Georgia Southern University in 1975, he received the Ruffian Cup, a distinguished award from Georgia Southern University for Excellence in the Liberal Arts in 1997. The author of several scholarly works on religious history, including Contemporary Reflections on the Medieval Christian Tradition, American Religious Heretics and The Humanness of John Calvin, Shriver has contributed articles to a sizable list of reference works, scholarly journals and books, and penned more than 300 book reviews. Named a professor of history emeritus at Georgia Southern University when he retired after 26 years on the faculty, he established the Dr. George H. Shriver lecture series with an endowment to allow nationally known scholars to spotlight the multifaceted role of religion in American history. |
