CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT
VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
(non-tenure track)

POSITION:

Stetson University seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry for a full-time, one-year, non-tenure-track appointment beginning in August 2013.  Salary is competitive.

QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A Ph.D. in a chemistry or chemistry related field is required.  Applicants with a specialization in water chemistry, environmental chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry, or biotechnology are especially encouraged to apply.  A strong commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level is expected.  This hire will have the opportunity to collaborate with Stetson's Biology, Environmental Science, and Integrative Health Science faculty with a goal of creating new synergies across these programs.  A candidate is desired who will be an active participant in the University's First Year Seminar or Junior Seminar program and is willing to develop courses suitable for general education designation.  While the assigned teaching load associated with this position will depend on the candidate's area of specialization, visiting faculty typically teach a foundational course in chemistry, either an in-depth course in the area of specialization or a seminar/general education course, and at least three laboratory sections each term.  All majors in the College of Arts and Sciences complete a Senior Project; applicants who have a scholarly agenda that incorporates student investigation are favored.  For more information on Stetson's expectations in teaching, please see the Academic Affairs website: http://www.stetson.edu/administration/academicaffairs/newfac.php.

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Chemistry program at Stetson is accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS), offering ACS Certified Degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry.  The department currently consists of five faculty members.  Our program has a strong tradition of graduating well-trained and qualified students who have continued on to reputable post-graduate institutions, industry, and teaching.  In 2009, the Stetson Chemistry-Biochemistry Program occupied a newly-constructed 22,000 square-foot science facility, expanding classroom and laboratory capacity by over 50%.  In addition, renovations of faculty/student research spaces in our former facility have recently been completed, supported by a 2011 National Science Foundation -Academic Research Infrastructure (NSF-ARI) grant of $610,000.  The new and renovated spaces are equipped with modern instrumentation purchased, in part, with a $2.75 million federal grant.  In Spring 2012, the Chemistry Program installed a new, NSF funded, 400 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer.
