Music Education
Major & Minor
Program Website
If you are interested in teaching music, and believe that music is learned "in the doing," you`ll feel at home in Stetson`s Music Education program. We share that philosophy, and -- believing that teaching is also learned "in the doing" -- our program offers many field-based experiences.
Faculty Our Music faculty members are active in research, conference presentations, performance, and professional consultations. The full-time faculty members in Music Education and their specialties are: Ann Small, Ph.D., Florida State University: choral teacher education, founder and director of Stetson University Children`s Choir, serves on editorial board of Research Perspectives in Music Education. Bobby Adams, Ph.D., Florida State University: symphonic band music, active in National Band Association, past president of Florida Bandmasters Association
Special Features Students may participate in apprenticeships with the Children`s Choir, Youth Orchestra, the Orff program for young children, and Community School Studio. In addition, you will have the opportunity to perform in a variety of ensembles, including the University Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, Stetson Chorale, Choral Union, Chamber Orchestra, and brass ensembles. Upon completion of your Music Education degree, you will receive certification to teach in the State of Florida, having been approved by the State Department of Education and the National Association of Colleges of Teacher Education.
Course Information As a Music Education major, you will participate in an intense degree program that seeks to prepare you for a professional career and graduate study in music education or performance. You will also participate in weekly private lessons, studio performance classes, and student recitals. You will be able to choose from two programs: Music Education/Vocal and Music Education/Instrumental.
Internship Opportunities Our students intern at local elementary, middle, and high schools.
Career Opportunities Stetson University graduates who hold a Music Education degree have a 100 percent job placement rate. Music Education graduates pursue careers in teaching, performing, and conducting; many also go on to do graduate study.
