Art
Major & Minor
Program Website
Studying Art at Stetson University will help you develop personal styles and directions based on a strong foundation of artistic technique, design principles, art historical tradition, and contemporary artistic theories. While becoming technically adept, you will also develop the ability to think critically, analytically, and creatively in our liberal arts environment. Our small classes assure individual attention, and round-the-clock access to studios allows ample opportunity to work outside of class.
Stetson`s studio art program has particular strengths in painting, drawing, mixed media and ceramics. Other areas of concentration include photography and sculpture. The Department of Art is also actively involved in the Digital Arts major, a partnership of the Art and Computer Science departments and the School of Music. Many of our students double major in Digital Arts, or minor in Digital Arts or Art History. Stetson offers a rich and varied program of visiting artists, lectures, and exhibitions that will broaden your exposure to contemporary art and artists. Recent lecturers and visiting artists have included Alison Saar, Samella Lewis, William Wiley, Patti Warashina, Michael Lucero, John Torreano, Carter Ratcliff, Jack Earl, Michael Rush, David Hickey, Vic Muniz, Zoe Leonard, Tania Bruguera, Donna Conlon, Graciella Sacco, Herb Jackson and John Paoletti. Stetson`s Duncan Gallery of Art also provides first-hand access to important new artwork. The gallery is a professional venue for students to show their work during the annual juried student art competition and the Senior Thesis Exhibition.
