Music Education
Department Site: http://www.stetson.edu/music/home/index.php Preparing for a career in teaching music means becoming accomplished in the following areas: music, education, and music education. As these areas are developed and integrated, teaching skills are learned and then utilized in the student teaching experience. A degree in music education at Stetson University prepares students, not only for a career in teaching, but sets them on a path that, with time and experience, leads to the highest level of intuitive teaching, i.e. the level of the master teacher. Faculty Our Music faculty members are active in research, conference presentations, performance, and professional consultations. The full-time faculty members in Music Education and their specialties are: Ann Small, Ph.D., Florida State University: choral teacher education, founder and director of Stetson University Children's Choir, serves on editorial board of Research Perspectives in Music Education. Bobby Adams, Ph.D., Florida State University: symphonic band music, active in National Band Association, past president of Florida Bandmasters Association
Students may participate in apprenticeships with the Children's Choir, Youth Orchestra, the Orff program for young children, and Community School Studio. In addition, you will have the opportunity to perform in a variety of ensembles, including the University Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, Stetson Chorale, Stetson Men, Choral Union, Chamber Orchestra, and brass ensembles. Upon completion of your Music Education degree, you will receive certification to teach in the State of Florida, having been approved by the State Department of Education and the National Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. Jason Paulk, '97, who won the 1996 national undergraduate choral conducting competition sponsored by the American Choral Directors Association, is completing a doctorate in music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman. Michael Eddy, '95, serves as Music Supervisor for Henry County in the Atlanta area. Heather Eyerly,'94, received a Rotary Scholarship and has nearly completed a Ph.D. at the University of Toronto. |
