PATRIARCH KIRILL CALLS RELUCTANCE OF SOME UKRAINIAN PRIESTS TO COMMEMORATE HIM IN PRAYERS FOR POLITICAL REASONS SIN
Interfax-Religiia, 3 March 2022
Patriarch of Moscow and all-Rus Kirill said that it is schism when a number of clerics of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church refuse to commemorate him in the divine liturgy because of disagreement in political matters.
The occasion for this determination was a letter that came to the patriarch from Metropolitan of Sumy and Akhtyrskiy Evlogy, which spoke about the suspension of commemoration of the patriarch during divine liturgies despite centuries-old church tradition, the patriarchal press service reports.
In expressing regret on this matter the patriarch cited the example of Archpriest Grigory Prosorov, who did not stop commemorating the name of Metropolitan Sergius when he performed the liturgy in the only church of the Moscow patriarchate in Berlin during the war, up until 1942, that is until his arrest and death.
"Suspension of commemoration of the primate of the church, not because of dogmatic or canonical errors but because of disagreement with one or another political view and preference, is schism for which each person who does it will answer to God and not only in the age to come but also in the present," Patriarch Kirill stressed in a resolution on the report of Metropolitan Evlogy, which was published on the website of the Russian Orthodox Church.
