FOUR CRIMEANS SENTENCED TO LONG PRISON TERMS FOR PLANNING COUP
Forpost Sevastopol, 16 August 2021
The Southern District Military Court announced the verdict in the criminal case of members of the terrorist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami (which is forbidden in Russia). The court found four residents of the republic of Crimea—Lenur Khalilov, Ruslan Mesutov, Ruslan Nagaev, and Eldar Kantimirov—guilty of planning and participating in the activity of a terrorist organization and of planning a violent overthrow of the government in the republic (part 1 and 2, article 205.5; part 1, article 30; article 278 of the Criminal Code of the R.F.).
Their sentences were determined in keeping with their roles: as the organizers of the Alushtin cell, Khalilov and Mesutov each received 18 years incarceration, and its members Nagaev and Kantimirov received 13 and 12 years in a penal colony of strict regime, the first two years to be served in a prison, the press service of the court reported.
The defendants were charged with propaganda, recruitment, and conspiratorial activity among residents of Crimea, leading ultimately to the violent seizure of power and establishment of a "World Caliphate" state, with a Sharia form of government.
The subjects in the case denied their guilt and their lawyers intend to appeal the verdict. (tr. by PDS, posted 17 August 2021)
