Report of Ukrainian president's meeting with Moscow bishops goes viral

PRESIDENT POROSHENKO TO CONDUCT MEETING WITH EPISCOPATE OF UPTsMP

RISU, 9 November 2018

On 8 November, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UPTsMP), Metropolitan Onufrey, signed an official letter to ruling bishops and assistant bishops in which he requires them to come to a meeting on 13 November with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Religiia v Ukraine reports.

The meeting will be held in an assembly hall of the Kiev caves lavra (corpus No. 45) at 2:00 p.m.

"The participation of all diocesan and vicar bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is obligatory," the letter notes.

Bishops must communicate to the chancellery of the Kiev metropolitanate about their participation in the event by 10 November inclusive.

It is obvious that at the meeting the question of support by bishops of the UPTsMP for the granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox church in Ukraine will be discussed.

POROSHENKO TO MEET WITH BISHOPS OF CANONICAL UPTs 13 NOVEMBER

RIA Novosti, 9 November 2018

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will conduct a meeting with bishops of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, RIA Novosti was told on Friday in the Kiev metropolitanate of the UPTs.

"This meeting is scheduled for 13 November," the chancellery said.

Other details were not reported in the chancellery, although it was added that the participation of all diocesan and vicar bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is obligatory.

Authorities in Kiev and the noncanonical church structure in Ukraine are counting on receiving a tomos concerning autocephaly from Constantinople by the end of the year, although the tomos may be received only by a primate of a "unified" church and he must be elected at a "unification council" of Orthodox churches in Ukraine and its date has still not been determined. At the same time, the canonical UPTs has declared that it does not intend to participate in such an event. . . . (tr. by PDS, posted 9 November 2018)

Credo.Press, 9 November 2018

The UPTsMP chancellor sent to all bishops of this church an obligatory order to appear on 13 November in Kiev for a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, the internet edition of Ukrainskaia Pravda reports, citing Metropolitan Alexander, who also received the order.

The meeting is supposed to be held in the assembly hall of the Kiev caves lavra on 13 November at 2:00 p.m. "Participation of all diocesan and vicar bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is obligatory," the order says.

At the same time, Metropolitan Alexander was not able to confirm whether the primate of the UPTsMP, Metropolitan Onufrey, will be present at the meeting.

The press service of the administration of the president also was still not able to officially confirm or deny the planned meeting. The chancellery of the Kiev metropolitanate of the UPTsMP also refused to comment on the information. (tr. by PDS, posted 9 November 2018)
