Jehovah's Witness allowed to go home after 160 days in jail

ONE OF FOUR TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN NABEREZHNYE CHELNY TO BE TRANSFERRED TO HOUSE ARREST

Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia, 8 November 2018

Ilkham Karimov is supposed to be transferred to house arrest after 160 days spent in the SIZO of the city of Chistopol of Tatarstan. This was ordered on 2 November 2018 by the Supreme Court of the republic of Tatarstan, repealing an order of the Naberezhnye Chelny city court, which in October extended the term of detention in custody to 25 December 2018. Despite the fact that the order of the higher court was issued six days ago, Ilkham Kariov has still not left the SIZO because of the slowness of the paper work.

A case against Ilkham Karimov as well as Vladimir Miakushin, Konstantin Matrashov, and Andar Yulmetiev was opened on the basis of points 1, 1.1, and 2 of article 282.2 of the CC of RF. The indictment maintains that these citizens worshipped the God Jehovah and it interprets that not as a constitutional right to freedom of religious confession but as an "organization," "participation," and "engagement in the activity of an extremist organization" (with reference to the decision of the Russian Supreme Court on liquidation of all 396 registered organizations of Jehovah's Witnesses). . . .
