SOVA Center for News and Analysis, 1 November 2018

Doctors refused to provide alternative treatment for a resident of Engels who refused a blood transfusion based on religious convictions.

On 12 October 2018, a 79-year-old resident of the city of Engels of Saratov oblast, who is a Jehovah's Witness, was refused treatment. On the basis of religious convictions, she refused a transfusion of donor's blood and requested an alternative. A doctor responded that an alternative to donor's blood does not exist, and since the patient is "in a sect," treatment will not be provided for her.

According to the doctor's prognosis, without treatment the woman is not likely to survive even a year. (tr. by PDS, posted 2 November 2018)
