Kiev patriarchate making plans for autocephaly

UNIFICATION COUNCIL OF UKRAINIAN CHURCH WILL BE HELD IN KIEV'S HOLY WISDOM CATHEDRAL

But majority of UPTsMP bishops will not be able to participate

Credo.Press, 31 October 2018

The secretary of the Holy Synod of the UPTsKP, Archbishop Evstraty, is sure that the unification council of the Orthodox church in Ukraine should be held in the historic Holy Wisdom cathedral of Kiev. "It seems to us that the logical and the only site . . . is the Holy Wisdom cathedral in Kiev. This is an historic church, the see of Kievan archbishops in a thousand-year history. It seems to be the only logical and appropriate place for such an event. Moreover, the cathedral of Holy Wisdom is a national reserve museum, which does not belong to any one of the Orthodox jurisdictions. From this point of view it also is a neutral site for conducting such an event," Evstraty said on 31 October in an interview with the internet publication Glavkom.

Holy Wisdom cathedral is part of the national preserve "Kievan Sophia" and it is included in the UNESCO world heritage list. The cathedral does not belong to any confession and it is state property. In this cathedral there usually is conducted prayer for which representatives of various confessions assemble on Ukrainian Independence Day, 24 August.

The synod's secretary also explained that participants in this council will only be able to be those who appealed to the patriarchate of Constantinople; that is, the majority of bishops of the UPTsMP will not be able to take part. "Able to participate in the meeting will be those who appealed to the ecumenical patriarch and also representatives of the ecumenical patriarch," he explained. (tr. by PDS, posted 31 October 2018)
