Georgian church refrains from taking sides in Ukrainian question

GEORGIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH CLARIFIES ITS POSITION ON GRANT OF AUTOCEPHALY TO UPTs

RISU, 8 October 2018

An official statement by the Georgian patriarch says that at a meeting with a bishop of the Georgian Orthodox Church, Patriarch of all-Georgia Ilia II, the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Andrei Paruby, reported on the attempt by Ukraine to achieve recognition of the autocephaly of the Ukrainian church.

To this, the primate of the Georgian church replied that this would be a delightful event, but there exist difficulties in the achievement of this matter.

"As regards the position of the Georgian church on the matter of the autocephaly of the Ukrainian church, it remains unchanged: until their final official positions have been identified on the foundation of canonical ecclesiastical norms by the Constantinople and Moscow patriarchates, the Georgian patriarchate is withholding comment," the Georgian patriarchate summarized. This was reported by Novoe Vremya.

It was reported earlier that Paruby met with the head of the Georgian church, Patriarch Ilia II, where the bishop spoke in favor of a positive resolution of the matter of granting autocephaly to the UPTs. (tr. by PDS, posted 8 October 2018)
