Pro-Moscow lawmaker tries to involve Turkish government in Ukrainian question

NOVINSKY ASKS TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTER TO BLOCK GRANTING OF TOMOS TO UKRAINIAN CHURCH

RISU, 10 August 2018

People's deputy Vadim Novinsky from the Opposition Bloc, at a meeting with the minister of foreign affairs of Turkey, tried to persuade official Anakara to act against the process of granting a tomos concerning autocephaly to the Ukrainian church.

This was reported by a people's deputy who coordinates the "Information Resistance" group, Dmitry Tymchuk, on his Facebook page, Ukrinform writes.

"According to intelligence of the Information Resistance group, Ukrainian people's deputy for the Opposition Bloc Vadim Novinsky is continuing systematic activity aimed at disrupting the receipt of autocephaly by the Ukrainian Orthodox Local Church," Tymchuk notes.

Thus, he said, during an informal meeting of Novinsky with Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlut Cavusoglu, that occurred in Turkey on 1 June, what was discussed was by no means a question of "economics and mutual investment," as is indicated on Novisnky's Facebook page.

"Through his contact in the Turkish government, Novinsky tried to reach out to official Ankara in a plan of acting against the process of the receipt of a tomos concerning autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Local Church," Tymchuk emphasized.

According to information of the Information Resistance, this informal meeting was arranged by one of the top managers of an enterprise owned by Novinsky, through his business contact in Turkey. "The immediate arrangers and participants of the meeting were Novinsky's contact in Ankara, who is still not identified, and the owner of the Littors hotel (in the city of Alanya), Mustafa Kemal Khaliala, who represents the district from which M. Cavusoglu was elected to parliament," Tymchuk noted.

He said, however, that "Novinsky did not succeed in persuading Turkish officials to exert influence on the Phanar's position. And, judging by everything, the valiant champion of Russia's ties heard the traditional "inshallah" ["God willing"] in response to his request. (tr. by PDS, posted 11 August 2018)
