PATRIARCH KIRILL TO GO TO CONSTANTINOPLE PATRIARCHATE IN LATE AUGUST TO DISCUSS PROBLEM OF UKRAINIAN AUTOCEPHALY
Portal.Credo.ru, 4 August 2018
Patriarch Kirill has scheduled a visit to the Constantinople patriarchate for late August for a meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew, the English version of the website Pravoslavie.ru reported on 3 August.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss problems with proclaiming autocephaly for the Ukrainian Church, which the Constantinople patriarchate is preparing to do. This problem will be considered by the Bishops' Council and Synod of the Constantinople Church at the end of August or beginning of September.
After an official appeal of the Ukrainian side in April, a specially created delegation of the Constantinople patriarchate began a series of visits to local churches for the purpose of discussing with their leadership the upcoming canonical act. Metropolitan Elpidifor recently accused the RPTsMP of conducting an information campaign against the Constantinople patriarchate.
"The atmosphere between the two churches is tense," the English version of the website, which is created in the Presentation monastery on Lubianka, writes "since Constantinople now maintains that Ukraine is its canonical territory."
On 5 August, the chancellery of the ecumenical patriarchate specified that Kirill's visit will be held on 31 August. (tr. by PDS, posted 7 August 2018)
