Jehovah's Witnesses' attempt to give building to Finnish coreligionists fails

JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES' MEETING HALL IN CITY OF BELORECHENSK IN KUBAN CONVERTED TO OWNERSHIP OF R.F.

Interfax-Religiia, 24 July 2018

A court converted to state property a meeting hall of the religious organization of Jehovah's Witnesses, who have been liquidated in Russia, which is located in the city of Belorechensk of Krasnodar territory, the press service of the territorial prosecutor's office told Interfax on Tuesday [24 July].

"The object of capital construction with an area larger than 200 square meters was used for religious meetings. On the basis of the decision of the Russian Supreme Court, the local organization of Jehovah's Witnesses of Belorechensk was liquidated and its property, which remains after the satisfaction of creditors' claims, is subject to conversion to state ownership," a press service employee said.

At the same time he added that the process of converting the object of immovable property to federal ownership has been delayed because the local religious organization donated it to one of the congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses in Finland.

"Because of this, the district prosecutor's office petitioned in court for recognizing the transaction of the transfer of property without a payment to be invalid. At the present time, the court has granted the petition of the prosecutor in full," the news agency's interlocutor specified.

It was reported earlier that in early July, a court in Anapa converted to state ownership a house of 150.4 square meters and land of 1,200 square meters in the settlement of Anapa, belonging to the local religious organization of Jehovah's Witnesses.

In the spring of 2017, the Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Justice for Krasnodar territory liquidated all religious congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses that were active in the region—more than 40 local religious organizations that were active in nearly all municipal formations of the territory.

On 20 April 2017, the Supreme Court of Moscow, on the basis of a lawsuit of the Russian Ministry of Justice, ruled the Russian Jehovah's Witnesses to be an extremist organization and forbade its activity on Russian territory. (tr. by PDS, posted 24 July 2018)
