Russian government tightens control of unregistered religious activity

NEW FORM OF NOTIFICATION ABOUT START OF RELIGIOUS GROUP'S ACTIVITY BEGINS IN RUSSIA ON 20 JULY

The Ministry of Justice will require, from 20 July, the indication of personal data of those submitting information about the start of the activity of a religious group, a notice posted on the website of the ministry on Thursday says.

 

"On 20 July 2018, the order of the Russian Ministry of Justice "On introducing changes into the form of notification about the start of the activity of a religious group, confirmed by order of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation of 5 October 2015 No. 234" will enter into legal force.

 

The new form of such notification is supplemented by information about the person submitting it and includes a voucher acknowledging receipt of the notification.

 

It was explained in the Ministry of Justice, that in accordance with federal law "On freedom of conscience and religious associations" the notification provides information about the fundamentals of a religious confession, the places of conducting worship services and other religious rituals and ceremonies, the leader, the representatives, and the citizens who constitute the religious group.
