Orthodox scholar elevates anticipation of Ukrainian action

FR. KIRILL GOVORUN: "TOMOS IS ALREADY PREPARED; IT IS WRITTEN BY ONE OF THE BEST CANONISTS IN THE ORTHODOX WORLD"

RISU, 26 May 2018

A professor of a university in Los Angeles, Father Kirill Govorun, an archimandrite of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, declared on air over 5 Channel that the tomos concerning autocephaly of the Ukrainian church has already been written, Religiina Pravda reports.

"The tomos (the text itself—ed.) is already prepared. It has already been written. I even know who wrote it. It was written by my teacher from Athens University, where I studied. He is one of the best canonists in the Orthodox world. I would say that he is a genius canonist. And canonical texts that he writes are absolutely perfect. Therefore I think that the tomos will be a thoroughly remarkable document, canonical, and it will not be possible to gainsay it, so to speak."

We recall that on 19 April deputies of the Verkhovna Rada voted for a resolution concerning the appeal of the president to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew for granting a tomos concerning autocephaly of the Orthodox church in Ukraine.

On 17 April, President Petro Poroshenko assembled leaders of the parliamentary fractions and declared that he was sending to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew a request to proclaim the autonomy of the Ukrainian Local Autocephalous Church. (tr. by PDS, posted 28 May 2018)
