You may use one of these scenarios as the basis for your thank-you letter:

  • Write your thank-you letter in response to a real job interview you've been on, even if it wasn't recent.
OR
  • Imagine that your informational interview was instead a real job interview and write a thank-you letter in response.
OR
  • Use the job described in the ad that you targeted in your cover letter and mock interview and write a thank-you letter in response.
OR
  • Simply write a thank-you letter in response to an imaginary job interview of any kind.
The thank-you letter you write for this assignment should:
  • Be in standard business letter format, single-spaced, signed.
  • Be relatively brief (3 paragraphs is fine, although it can be longer).
  • Not contain typos/misspellings. Like the resume and cover-letter assignments, the thank-you letter is subject to a 10-pt. deduction for each typo/misspelling.
  • Incorporate at least one of the following thank-you letter concepts:
-Use the letter to stress how well you fit in well with the company culture, especially now that you know more about it having gone through the interview.
-Use the letter to build on the strengths of the interview and emphasize the match between you and the job.
-Use the letter to bring up anything you thought of after the interview that is pertinent to the employer's concerns.
-Use the letter to do damage control – to address (carefully) anything that went wrong in the interview.
-Use the letter to indicate that you are providing additional materials (references, transcripts, writing samples) that the interviewer has requested or that you feel might positively affect the hiring decision.
-Use the letter to restate your understanding of the next step in the process.
-Use the letter to restate your enthusiasm for the job.
