Procedure for Mock Interviews
READ CAREFULLY
This procedure is subject to change, and you will receive an update with a detailed schedule before the interviews commence.

Interview

For ALL students:

1. We will be on a rather tight timeframe for these interviews, so it is important to show up when you are scheduled -- or preferably earlier. You will receive a schedule telling you when you are to be interviewed and when you are serving as interviewer.

2. During the days of the Mock Interviews, April 2, 4, 9, and 11 you will be scheduled to come to class for 10-20 minutes on the day of your interview, about half the class period on the day that you serve as an interviewer, and not at all on two of the four days. Use your time on your "free" days wisely, perhaps to work on your final project.

3. I will not have time to physically collect the assignment due on April 11 (Who Am I Story OR Personal Branding Statement), so please leave these assignments in my office (LBC 432D); my door will be open, and a bin will be available for collection. If you are not scheduled for part of the interviewing process on the day this assignment is due, be sure to get your assignment to my office (send with a friend, hand in ahead of time, or bring it yourself). Same goes for picking up graded assignments during this period; you may pick them up from clearly marked boxes in my office.
It's also possible I will allow you to submit this paper electronically.

4. All mock interviews will be held in LBC 116.

For students on the day you are being interviewed:

1. Wear business attire just as you would wear to a real interview. See the absolute ideal for men and women.

2. Arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled appointment (it's important to be early because we often run ahead of schedule). You may wait quietly outside the door of the interview room (LBC 116.).

3. If you are not outside the interview room at the appointed time, we will go on to the next person. You may wait to see if we have time to interview you at the end of the session, but you lose 1 point for every minute of lateness, and if no time is available to interview you, you will lose the opportunity to be interviewed and thus, the 100 points for the assignment.

4. In theory, everyone should be able to make his or her interview appointment since interviews are scheduled during class time. If you need to swap with someone, do so well in advance and inform me. Keep in mind that a person cannot be interviewed on the same day he or she is serving as interviewer. Swapping with someone when you can't make your interview appointment is solely YOUR responsibility.

5. In the interest of time, you will not be able to shake hands with everyone in the group interviewing you the way you probably would in a real interview. Introduce yourself to the group as a whole, not individually. You may shake hands with the person on your right, who will probably our guest professional. BRING your resume and hand it to the guest professional. No resume, no interview.

6. We will allot 9 minutes for each interview. You will be asked approximately 8 questions by members of the interview team and possibly instructor and/or guest professional. Some will be questions you've prepared responses for in the Responses to 20 Frequently Asked Interview Questions assignment from and these web readings:

some will relate to in-class discussions of Interview Skills lectures on March 14 and 19. At least one question will be an "off-the-wall" question that tests your ability to "think on your feet." See this article for tips on handling these questions: Don't Get Stumped By Off-the-Wall Wild Card" Interview Questions. There will be a different set of questions for each day of interviewing.

7. The job you are supposedly interviewing for is the one that you submitted a want ad or description for on Feb. 19. Keep that job in mind as you respond to the questions.
8. You will be graded on the following criteria:
  • Business Attire
  • Eye Contact
  • Confidence
  • Content of responses
  • Enthusiasm
  • Avoidance of Bad Habits/Inappropriate Body Language
Each member of the interview team will rate you on a scale of 1-5 in each of these areas. The average of these ratings will result in up to 30 points from the interview team. I will rate you on a scale of 1-10 in each of these areas for up to 60 more points, and award up to 10 additional points for overall interview performance. Total: 100 points. I also always try to have a guest human-resources or other professional sit in on these interviews and critique students' performance, but these critiques do not affect your grade.

9. It is strongly suggested that you not give your classmates an unfair advantage by coaching them on the questions after you leave your interview.

For students serving on the interviewing panel:

1. PLEASE arrive on time for your scheduled time as an interviewer, and please get down to business quickly. If you arrive late, and door to interview room is closed, please wait until previous interviewee comes out before knocking or entering.

2. In theory, everyone should be able to make his or her scheduled time to be an interviewer since the times are scheduled during class periods. If you CANNOT make your scheduled time as an interviewer DO NOT attempt to swap with someone, but DO tell me in advance that you won't be coming.

3. In the interest of time, do not introduce yourself to interviewee unless you are the person on the interviewee's right, the spot usually reserved for the guest professional.

4. You will be given a clipboard with a sheet for each interviewee. The sheet you are given for each interviewee will have one or more questions on it and scoring information. We will ask questions counterclockwise around the table. So that each interviewee is asked the same set of questions, DO NOT ad lib questions or ask followups.

5. On the evaluation sheet for each interviewee, you will rank the interviewee on a scale of 1-5 in the following areas.

  • Business Attire
  • Eye Contact
  • Confidence
  • Content of responses
  • Enthusiasm
  • Avoidance of Bad Habits/Inappropriate Body Language
Please mark your evaluation sheets quickly. Hold onto all sheets until all interviewees are interviewed; leave them on the clipboards. Do not put your name on these sheets.

6. You do not need to wear business attire when you are doing the interviewing.
